EU Stops Aid Payments To Palestine After Hamas Attacks

The European Commission said on Monday it was putting all its development aid to Palestinians, worth 691 million euros ($729 million), under review and immediately suspending all payments following Hamas' attack on Israel.

"The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people is a turning point," Oliver Varhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, said in a post on social media. "There can be no business as usual."

Hamas militants killed 700 Israelis and abducted dozens in the deadliest such incursion since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago, prompting Israel to retaliate with its heaviest ever bombardment of Gaza, which has killed more than 400 people.

Varhelyi said all new budget proposals for Palestinian aid were also postponed until further notice.

"The foundations for peace, tolerance and co-existence must now be addressed," he said.

"Incitement to hatred, violence and glorification of terror have poisoned the minds of too many," he added. "We need action and we need it now."

Earlier on Monday, Austria said it was suspending aid worth tens of millions of euros to Palestinians in response to the attack on Israel to ensure funds were not flowing into the wrong hands, while Germany was reviewing its support.

According to the bloc, it has provided humanitarian aid to help meet Palestinians’ basic needs since 2000 through the European Commission’s humanitarian aid department (ECHO) and the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Since 2000, ECHO has provided 700 million euros of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Is the decades long ongoing humanitarian crisis in the area not sufficient enough?

FWIW, since 2007:

- Nepal has received €3.3 billion in aid;

- Bhutan has received € 229.9 million in aid; 

- Palestine has received €12.4 billion in aid

Taiwan is amalgamated into the figure for China, which is € 13.3 billion

How insensitive of you to say that. Palestine is a country under military occupation with no access to any sources whatsoever.

Europe is now saying the money is going into the wrong hands. I mean where else would they get all the money to buy rockets and ammunition. I’m all for supporting the people but it looks like they aren’t benefiting from these aids at all.

In the past, some. Now? Minimal at best. The gulf countries have been historically anti-Palestinian for decades. Furthermore, there has been animosity against Levantine Arabs from the gulf for over a century, and that has grown over the years.

In the period 1994–2020, the Arab League and its members donated a total of $8.5 billion USD, with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Algeria, Qatar, and Kuwait as top 5 donors.

The annual support has plummeted since 2020 by and is now only about 20% of what it used to be. Support from SA alone dropped by 77%– Qatar increased their donations and are now the highest donor
