Lush Life is my favorite Jazz song and Gaga's voice fits very well to the song. I've been watching this video and I thought I wish she stopped using the baby-like nasal voice that she's using A LOT lately and go back singing like this:

her best vocal ever

the placement is superb, the tone is on point, her voice sounds so resonant here

Her current nasally jazz technique is the primary reason I prefer Cheek To Cheek over Love For Sale :enigma:

You do realize this was like 10 years ago right? i don’t think she sounds too different - i actually think she has a better idea of how she wants to sound as a jazz singer now.  But i understand why this is ‘technically’ better.

She’s GAGA - not Diana Krall.

I think it isn’t a 10 years’ difference quality of her voice type deal. I think it’s just preference and style. Like if you hear lady is a tramp she had flavors of her current jazz voice and even on goody goody also. I think she just likes to play it hammy on jazz songs and SUPER theatrical. Her cover of don’t let me be misunderstood kinda sealed that for me bc she never had to sing it that way for help getting to the notes or anything. In fact, the song is basically tailor made to her voice. It’s just a preferential style which to each their own. But I don’t think 10 years has a thing to do with it; she’s still got a phenomenal voice :)

im just saying you can’t expect someone to be the exact same person as 10 years ago - of course she still has a fantastic voice. Just uses it differently

What’s ironic is that you being gay should actually make you think of this Lush Life, as it was written by an openly gay man during the jazz age, Billy Strayhorn. Not some song by a straight girl. :ladyhaha:

Honestly, no lies detected. Revoking my own gay card as we speak

If you listen to a perfomance from the current run, I don't think it sounds all that different from 10 years ago, in terms of the style she's adopting, ie I don't think it's all THAT nasally. She sang it kind of straight in that gold dress performsnce, but these days I think she tries to sound a bit drunk, and she is drinking what is presumably whiskey so that might help. Esperanza Spalding did a lovely version where she deliberately does some slurring. It's an obvious way to go with the song. Bear in mind as well that the gold dress performance isn't live (I think). It was recorded for a tv special, so it may have been tidied up a bit. The current performances we're hearing are 100% live and they are amateur footage.
