Do you agree with Taylor being the best at re-inventing herself?

This is *very* silly. The tour is successful bc she is successful not bc she has almost ever reinvented herself. And that’s not even a drag! Her appeal for a LONG time has been how she doesn’t really do the pop girl changing it up massively thing. She, like Adele, were foils to an image-based pop world.

the only people who could really do a legitimate “eras” tour would be Madonna, Gaga, Britney, Beyoncé, Kylie, Janet Jackson, even people like bjork (who has some of the most distinctive sonic and aesthetic eras you’ll ever see for an artist outside these girls’ budgets), Miley Cyrus lol. Her wearing a flowy dress and sitting in a house for folklore is really not that distinctive from aesthetics of her early albums lmao the only real shakeup was reputation; the other albums were just different themes lol and as I said, the tour is successful bc she is successful. She could have done, really, any big show featuring songs of her career (which was going to happen anyway since that’s how shows work lol) and call it ham sandwich and it would have been successful.

her diehards are reeeeaaally reaching with this one. She’s talented. She’s changed over time. It’s really not so drastic as some of these tweets are making it sound nor is it to the GP like they’re alleging. Like one person was talking about changing personalities each era?? I’m sorry but baby Taylor’s appeal has been consistency in her personality lmao Gaga is a good example of changing personality. Girl even adds new personal history every era (loved jazz, acting, etc. since I was 13 :laughga:). THAT is reinvention and it’s why people tired of her lmao Taylor is good at knowing the balance between giving some variety and a fresh coat of paint to the brand vs someone like Gaga who goes full tilt into building from the foundation up and remodeling the house regardless of whether or not it’ll work.

1989 - Reputation - Lover - folklore were big jumps in style and music. Midnights is not as big a change, but she has reinvented herself plenty of times with great commercial and critical success.

I’d argue 1989 was an evolution from red and lover dovetails well into folklore for the most part. Like they’re not always reinventions in the sense we talk about them but more or less just growth which there’s no shame in whatsoever. But if I’m looking at the queen of reinvention (Madonna) saying TSwift is in that category is kinda wild imo regardless of how good she is

What Taylor does isn’t “reinvention”. It’s just growth.

The only true master of reinvention is MaDONNA. Artists like Gaga, Xtina, and even Beyonce have messed with it. But no one has ever been able to do it on the scale that Madonna has.

No and I'm confused why Taylor and reinvention keep being used in the same sentence.

Madonna is the queen of reinvention and Gaga, Beyonce and Rihanna the daughters in my opinion. Taylor's career is many things but reinvention and versatility... I don't think so.

This will probably get me dragged and labeled a hater but to me all her stuff sounds pretty much the same. The only standout album was 1989 and midnights sounds very similar to it. I don’t see the “queen of reinventing” herself at all. Especially now with all these rereleases , they could all be from the same album and I wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference.

Nah, she has evolved album to album and has grown absolutely, but country pop to pure pop is a reinvention just not to the level of genre shifting while still staying successful. When Gaga did ARTPOP to cheek 2 cheek to Joanne to ASIB, that kept her pop career relevant (repeaking with shallow), Taylor is great but catering to the widest audience.

No :flippy: I will say that it kind of sucks feeling completely uninterested in the biggest artist of our generation though :franminervini: She's arguably our "MJ/Madonna/Beatles/Elvis" etc and I can barely even sit through the duration of her albums

Y'all are acting dumb tbh - there's a reason this tour is selling out like crazy and you can't diminish that because of personal preference

There's a huge nostalgia factor here, and her "growing up" and writing about her life changes is reinvention to a lot of people. No, she doesn't aesthicaly change like Gaga or Madonna, but the eras for Taylor reflect her love, loss, different genres, maturity levels, etc. It's more relatable.

Like sorry girlies but Gaga singing Starstruck is not going to equate to Taylor performing Long Live :lolga:

You can’t change definitions just because you like an artist. An artist being popular does not allow it either. It just shows anything Taylor does is being exaggerated, proving that she is overrated. What Taylor is doing is not reinvention. Saying that she’s best at it is a jab for people actually putting hard work doing it. I remember people calling heavy choreographies bad and telling that Taylor’s dancing is better because it is more “relatable” and it is how they dance :fail:

The issue is that Taylor's eras are more consistent and feel like era compared to Gaga's (post C2C) which hardly last for 2 singles. (Prior to C2C Gaga's redefined what it means to have an Era but after Joanne...ugh)

Take Reputation and Lover vs Joanne and Chromatica.

She released LWYMMD, video and all. Then Ready for it video...then another video with Ed Sheeran. Apart from lead the remaining weren't a hit at all....yet she still released Delicate video which became a cute Radio hit and the Rep era lasted for quite a while. Same with Lover with lead Me! being not a hit, then Calm Down video and afterwards Lover video and even The Man video elongating the era which wasn't much of a hit to last for a long time. All the singles were sent to Radio as well.

For Joanne we hardly got two proper single with PI and MR. Joanne was released at the end when the era was dead. And JW wasn't sent to radio or released as a proper single.

And Chromatica... the less said about it better. Apart from ROM mini era it was hardly an era....

Hence, post 2016- Taylor wins at Eras.

Yes because being "overrated" is a qualifiable fact :wtfga:

I really wouldn't say she is the best at reinventing herself. She has managed to stay relevant through the years because of her songwriting skills and her ability to market herself. She plays it very safe overall and her reinventions feel very surface level. Gaga and Madonna are way better in reinvention, it truly feels like a new era when they release an album.
