Future Lovers 6,926
(Not sure if this is the right section, but please move it if it isn't!) Lately I've seen a very disturbing upward trend in speculation about the sexuality of famous people, and I truly do not understand it. While this has always been a thing, in the age of social media it has grown to be particularly invasive. And my question is...why? Why do people feel like it's any of their business when it truly in every way is not? Why do people think it's okay to not only speculate, but outright assign people a sexuality despite the celebrity not doing so themselves. We see this happening with people like Taylor (Gaylors), people like Shawn Mendes, we saw it happen with Kit Connor, we see it everywhere. It's honestly kinda gross? It's invasive, it's disrespectful, and it's so destructive to the very idea that straight people could and should be allies. Every time a straight celebrity demonstrates solidarity with the community, they're automatically assumed to be a part of it and people will not let it go. That is such a dangerous and unproductive mindset to slide into and I don't get it. I especially don't get why queer people themselves want to engage this? They should know more than anybody how personal and delicate something like sexuality is, so why would anyone who's had that experience want to treat it like it's a game? And when the celebrities themselves say they're not comfortable with it, they take heat for it? Like I get that people want to see more gay icons, but you can't jut assign someone a sexuality and have them be your gay icon. I just wanna hear from you all on this. What is this phenomenon, why are people so obsessed with it, and why is the disgusting behavior that comes with it so seemingly widespread and accepted? River 117,115
Because sexuality is not a taboo anymore and people can discuss it between them in social media or a forum. The situation with Kit Connor was too extreme, he was forced, was stupidly blamed for queerbaiting, he was only 18 and he had every right to stay in the closet at that age, people were just assholes. Taylor and Shawn? these are just fantasies. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
calmar 22,064
I think a part of it is that for celebrities, the interpersonal sense of humanity you feel with friends, family, and other people you know in real life is never quite established. They don't know these people, they can project onto them whatever they want. It's like falling too hard for someone you don't know well yet. 俺の勝利は揺るぎない
RAMROD 109,628
I guess people want to be represented. Celebs, especially the A listers have such huge platforms and very visible. So I guess it means a lot when such celeb announces personal things like that, cos it is empowering when they share something very private, be it sexuality, their mental health struggles, addiction to subtances, and more, and some community are feeling represented from it. Especially if the issues are rarely discussed by the masses. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ dancin' until i'm dead (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡

And it’s incredibly disgusting the lengths people go to with them. Twitter trends about Gaylors burning their merch because she started dating a man after Joe. There was a whole twitter trend with thousands of tweets saying she was a queer baiter. Shawn’s social media comments being full of “come out” and the f slur. Shawn has released two official statements saying he wants it to stop and it’s done nothing but continue. It may be fantasies, but none of that is okay. It’s no one’s business, but if you absolutely have to engage it why must that engagement happen publicly where these people can see it when they have gone on record saying they don’t like it? Like that’s really nasty, but all over social media the prevailing opinion is that’s just an okay thing to do because it’s celebrities?
hELXIG 43,063
Why is anybody obsessed with knowing anyone's sexuality tbh. It's something that should just exist naturally in the background with no scruntinsation That being said.. when it comes to celebrities everything is politicised and picked apart. People want to either have a strong opinion about it, relate to it, or have some validation for their internal fantasies I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. Zaskar 3,929
I guess part of it because we have so less out LGBT celebrities (big ones, not B/C list YouTubers) that whenever we see any hope that we might get some visibility if some A list celebrity comes out, we get on itr. Harry Styles another example

While I agree with that, it's also a subject that the person should adress themselves and only if they feel like doing it. And then again, it's only true for certain parts of the world
Reject False Icons 4,770
Not only with famous people but with everyday people, the gays are the first ones to see feminine behavior in kids and automatically shout to everyone they are going to be f**g**s, That’s just a part of being misogynistic, when other people don’t comply to their gender demands they trash them, and they fall from the path everyone expected them to follow and people express their frustration on attacking that person, And also it’s being plain stupid forgetting your history and not being empathetic with other peoples life situations
