Sex education makes no acknowledgement of queer people (and in some places is not offered at all). Science, biology...all courses presume only heterosexuality and cisgender identity. Schools barely acknowledge queer people exist. In Florida and other states, queer teachers have been forcibly closeted and their classes cannot mention the existence of queer and trans people. Especially if you’re visibly queer (for example an androgynous or pre-transition, transitioning or non-passing transgender person) it’s even worse. This type of bullying is very different and has bigoted and ableist undertones, which is why you hear so many LGBTQIA+ people have such traumatizing experiences. Things like openly speculating student’s orientation based on gender non-conformity, stereotypes and outing still happen, besides all the petty insults, microaggressions, you name it. When my mom found out I was being bullied, she made sure the parents of the bullies knew about it. The kids got disciplined and I was never bullied again. That’s the “hell” they got. Trust me when I say that being LGBTQIA+ in public schools (or even assumed to be) leads to serious bullying, harassment and speculation. It makes students feel unsafe. I’d know, I experienced it first hand, along with some other queer people at my school. Have some of you ever interacted with people in high school nowadays? Ableism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, xenophobia, misogyny etc. It’s all rampant. The whole alt-right pipeline online hasn’t helped either. I agree that school is there to teach you how to do life, but the point of history to help justify what and why something is taught today. Thanks for the clarification. You must know that since not every child is inherently homophobic, there’s a reason your bully was homophobic. This education would do a lot to prevent homophobic bullying. This is not an either/or.
