Gene Wilder’s Wonka was of course iconic, but Depp truly embodied the Wonka character best. Outrageously zany and wacky while being reserved and poignant at the same time. After seeing him in Dune, CMBYN, and even Lady Bird, his performance here so far is so incredibly different from his other films I was GAGGED. 'Cauee all I see in this trailer is an actor acting... in stead of embodying a character. He clearly doesn’t naturally carry this kind of whimsy and ease about him (his past roles would very clearly demonstrate that, too), so I think you feel the force of what he’s doing a bit too much. You’re able to read the acting a little too much imo. Not bad bad but when you’re filling the shoes of gene wilder and Johnny depp, you *really* need to bring it and have it just work.
