Stanley Tucci says he thinks straight actors should be able to play gay characters

Of course I know that also. We’re not really disagreeing, except that I think there is more of a stigma cast on gay men playing straight roles than straight men playing gay roles and you seem to think it’s totally equal, which is your right to do so. We can agree to disagree.

Well of course they do, but that often plays into what I was saying about who is the best person for that role. Believability is about attitude, is about how an actor sells it. Sure their appearance factors in, it will factor in if it's for a gay man playing a gay character too. But chemistry is derived from more than just looks, but also how an actor performs. Sometimes a straight actor is able to give that better than a gay actor is and vice versa. There's been plenty of gay men who've played believably opposite women in heterosexual screen romances.

My last post was meant to quote you but I forgot to actually quote you and I don’t feel like trying to delete and correct it. Lol

I agree. It's acting. At the end of the day, the point of a film or a piece of theatre is story telling through characters. I don't care who the person is outside of their role as long as they tell the story. The argument that gay characters can only be played by gay people is silly and constricting.

Controversial opinion: I also believe this to be true for other character identities. The only time I find it unacceptable is when it comes to skin color or race.

Oh no, sorry that isn't what I'm trying to get across! I don't think they're on equal standing no. I agree with you that we're not disagreeing exactly, I was just trying to say that I don't think studios are thinking about the sexuality of the actor they're casting, at least not on a super deep level. I do believe gay actors don't have the same wealth of opportunity for a lot of reasons, I just don't know personally if a studio is putting as much thought into those things when it comes to this specific issue as much as they do other issues that stand in the way of queer performers.

Gay actors should have more opportunities to play any characters, type casting them for the gay characters is actually bad for their career.

or maybe they should make more gay roles/main roles

and not just throw in a gay role that has zero importance in a story

gay roles should be left for gay actors but gay actors should still be able to be cast in str8 roles because LGBT ppl are oppressed by str8 ppl.

the same with the little mermaid situation, halle should be able to play little mermaid because black folks have been disenfranchised for decades in hollywood and still are to this day - but white actors should never be able to play a black character or black historical/fictional role because white people have always been the oppressors.

It's not the same at all, you are mixing 2 different things, sexual orientation and race are like oranges and apples.

but then gay actors are not really acting, their just playing themselves or changing their feminine/masculine meter depends on the kind of gay, which makes the whole thing even worst and even some kind of a self caricature.

I believe that it's only applied to trans actors, the life experience as trans is something that only trans can bring to the screen and their opportunities are close to zero.

Very that. I think the „straight playing gay“ discussion, nowadays, is a little misplaced. There definitely has been a time where this was much more of an issue but luckily times have changed for the gays (depending on your country/field of discourse you wanna look at and so on oc).

Don’t know if anyone else is listening to Jinkxes Podcast, but they had Mason Alexander Park on their most recent episode and both of them touched on that discussion, regarding non-b and trans roles in film, including the Danish Girl. The Pod in general is a great listen and I highly recommend

The very essence and art form of being an actor depends on options like this being possible.

Expecting only gay actors to play gay characters forces closeted gay actors to out themselves to avoid criticism, and no one should have to do that.

Do you feel him sir?
