StrawberryBlond 14,102
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that everything post-FN has sounded like songs that weren't good enough to make the final cut. Having a set sound is all very well as long as you smash it but if it all sounds mediocre, there's a problem. I think forming a solid sound for yourself can be a blessing and a curse. Female artists are always under pressure to change and challenge themselves yet their fans can be alienated when they do and it can spell the end of their careers. It's all about knowing what your fanbase is like and what change they can handle and be receptive to. There's a big chance Dua will continue with the FN sound with her next album but while some may say that's a safe option, it's a massive risk, so far as I can see. The most obvious example of trying to recreate your album with the very next one but have it be less well received would be Katy Perry, when she went from Teenage Dream to Prism, when she took the same themes and sound but made it much more kid-friendly with more formulaic lyrics, in the hopes of becoming even bigger because she would appeal to the masses even more. It actually resulted in lower sales with her music now being branded too similar and trying too hard to recreate past success. When she followed it up with a very different sound with Witness, consequently, her fanbase had aged out or wasn't ready for such a change. The downside of having a young fanbase was that they grow up and/or move on quickly. I'm also seeing the same kinda thing happening to Ava Max when she put out exactly the same kinda album three years after her last one. After all this time, you expect to see some growth and when it's not there, the public can move on. There will be similar pressure on the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish to start changing their sounds very soon as well. It's common for the public to be all over you for 1-2 albums and then seem to drop you for no reason. It's usually by the third album that you start to know if you're going to stick around. I don't get where this idea that she brought back the disco sound comes from. The disco sound came back in 2013 and was just going through a bit of dip when she put the album out. If anything, she was inspired by those trends to do disco. I also can't think of any big disco infused hits other than hers at this time. If anything, I thought she was taking a big risk making disco infused music at the time because we were in the process of phasing out that trend. I don't think she brought anything back, she just kept it around a bit longer.
