I'm so happy that they chose a black actress to play Ariel. Sadly, it's a provocative act to conservatives which led to negative reviews  and thus to low box office numbers (esp. in China and South Korea).

I believe that in the long run it will have its impact meaning that people and kids out there maybe will only know a black Ariel. Or maybe it inspires new filmmakers to include more diverse characters in the future!

I think with such a bad box office result ( at the End of the year this movie will be one of the bigest revenue losses for a studio ) it will turn directors and studios away from “ controversial “ castings in the future big movies.

Nobody wants to lose money when you put estimated 500M in one movie.

Its almost doubling its budget in less than a month? I dont think that's losing money.

Budget for filming alone was 250M and on that you need to add promotion costs and that is estimated to be at 140M for Little Mermaid. That is 390M and all other various costs Are another 100M. That is 490M. After this is crossed movie starts to make profit.

It won’t make that much. It alread started to be put out of program in Many countries in Europe.

Up against many odds and still passed 400m. Idk what anyone says, I think that’s pretty great. We all know why it’s underperforming internationally 🙄

Gentle reminder that what is not included in box office numbers but IS included in recoup revenue is merchandise, which Disney is selling hand over fist.

The movie is most likely already earning them a profit and will reach new peaks once it hits VOD and Disney+.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

And yet merchandise is not counted in movie earnings but as a brand that certain movie or charachter is.

Merch will not prevail into saying movie is a success If box office Numbers Are not there.

Is it really racism that caused this thing to underperform? I have watched it and it was mediocre at best, people are getting tired of the Disney cash grabs that consist of releasing inferior versions of timeless classics and these remakes have always gotten shitty reviews from critics just like they deserve. This Little Mermaid Remake was nearly as bad as that Lion King abomination.

Well most other movies were part of Christmas season right? It’s kinda strange, it’s a movie that works well as a live action. Maybe the cast is also at fault. She is still a new face, Ursula is an actress that does kinda b movies. It’s not Aladdin with will smith for example, or miss hermione lol as belle

Omg you guys and racism. Are we really sure that’s the problem. If anything that is controversy that generates views online. I don’t know if that would be the reason for a general public. Maybe for fanatics yeah sure

I wonder if promo was a factor. I saw like 0 promo on it and until yesterday didn't even know that movie was already out

Considering most of those that have seen the film praise both Halle and Melissa, that’s not the problem. Idk why you guys keep wanting to act like racism isn’t playing a big factor into this. For the past 4 years, I’ve seen nothing but faked racist imagery of Halle and people talking about nothing but boycotting for her alone.

And yet I bet Transformers or The Flash will smash at box office, both of which are profit driven mindless entertainment like this is, and no one will complain about us having hundreds of superhero movies that are essentially the same thing redone over and over. I'm going to see this tonight and I'm excited because I'm a Disney nerd, I don't usually do blockbusters, but honestly anyone who complains about Disney redoing anything can choke if they watch any kind of money driven sequel or franchise.

Guys, maybe it is not the casting or racism, but maybe it is because all those remakes are just super unnecessary. They are just a money-grab from Disney, and maybe people are finally seeing that. Same as with slapping Beyonce on the Lion King, just for money. All those movies are loosing the magic the originals had

The fact that so many people have a problem with the casting of Ariel being black.. But no problem with the casting of Ursula is exactly modern racism. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Halle Bailey did such a great job with her role and was amazing whereas Melissa was barely passable for her role.
