Its about fighting to be with the love of your life even if you had to sacrifice something. because nobody who actually loves you would want you to give up your "voice", that's somebody who wants to control and abuse you (hence why it's the villain's idea, not eric's) mother, what must i do? tomsches 17,325
Let’s ban all movies TV shows and books because the vast majority of them are about people who have problems or moral conflicts and I don’t think it’s ok that our ChIlDrEn are exposed to that. While we’re at it let’s ban fun, because there are people who don’t have fun and that’s insensitive. Let’s ban breathing because that’s disrespectful to the dead! Poissonche 12,365
Like the movie or not, saying that The Little Mermaid is a story about giving up your voice for a man is not only a gross misreading, but also does not take into account the story's queer origins. Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote the original fairy tale, wrote it about being a man in love with another man - and this was written in the 1800's. For example, the whole "giving up your voice", is actually a metaphor about Andersen waiting around for the other man to fall in love with him, without being able to tell him anything, because a man couldn't love another man. Other random things that happen or are being said in the tale suddenly make sense when you read it with the queerness in mind. And the Disney movies did take that into account. Making Ariel obsessed with humans and making her want to be a part of their world, while her father hates humans, can be seen as being gay with homophobic parents. The scene where Triton destroys everything in Ariel's grotto could be read as your homophobic father discovering your drag queen supplies, your secret pride merch, or else, and destroying it. I could go on an on about this, I'm sorry, I am quite The Little Mermaid geek. It's just, for years, seeing and hearing people say such horrible things about this story while it's such a beautiful piece of queer history annoys me quite a bit. Thank you for reading. If she was just horny af she had her pick of mermen, I’m sure. It goes deeper than that

I love The Little Mermaid, but guuurl lol….the story is about a girl giving up what makes her unique to fit into a man’s basic world. Not exactly the best message for young girls.
