I'll give you an example: Let's say you get 40% of the raw vote: that translates to 12 pts Second in place gets 8% of the raw vote: that translates to 10 pts. The number of points given to each country is NOT proportional to their lead in the raw vote. A 32% lead is equivalent to 0.1% lead. They both give mere 2pt lead in ESC points. So if you want to win, you need to be doing well across the board. This works very similar to preferential voting. 2nd, 3rd, 4th places still help tremendously. We all know the votes are not proportional. But my 20 votes will contribute to the country getting 12 points, so the more votes the better. 20 votes are not sufficient to “ spread the love”.
