this whole verse.

I asked my girlfriend if she'd seen you 'round before (oh yeah)
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor, baby
"We might've ****ed, not really sure, don't quite recall
But something tells me that I've seen him, yeah"

What don’t you understand lol

Also 'I wish that I could dance on a single prayer' always got me puzzled in terms of literal meaning :max:

She said she wrote the song about a night out in Berlin where she wanted to just let loose and have fun, but it felt like there was constantly men around her telling her what she could and couldn't do (I assume bouncers, her bodyguards etc.)  so I guess all she wanted to do was dance, but no matter how much she wanted to, they wouldn't let her. So she's in the club wishing and praying so badly that she could just get away and let loose. So basically she wishes that it would be as easy as just making one prayer to get her freedom, instead of dealing with all this bullsh.it (scheisse) caused by men. I hope that makes sense :spin:

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

"If I were the last girl, and you were the last boy, left here on this planet, and there was an Earthquake, maybe then you'd love, maybe then you'd love me, if there was an earthquake."

I always assumed the earthquake was the reason they're the last people on Earth which makes more sense (the whole 'would you love me if I was the last person on earth' thing), but it sounds like the earthquake happens after the fact?

How can you be in the shallow if you're far from the shallow? :grr: Make up your mind, Gaga!

I interpreted it as they keep reminiscing their pain, emptiness, loneliness and stagnation in their life in the first part, repeating the same line over and over, hauntingly drowning in their sorrows (which would make sense thematically because Shallow was originally written for the end credit and Jack was originally going to drown himself in the early movie scripts if my memory serves me right).
But together, they experience something profoundly authentic hence when they’re together, they’re far from the shallow.

i think maybe it means

"i wish i could dance without anyone elses permission" and dance might be a metaphor for something else

"I hope that you will love me in this way For who I am—not then—but for today"

Maybe the person on the song is so uninterested on Gaga she would need a real miracle for them to like her back, because even if they were the last two people on earth, they wouldn't be together, so she asks if after all that, if there's an earthquake and they almost die maybe this person would finally love her? I don't know, it's what I think

Head Empty

I struggle with the perspective of the lyrics in Swine.

(Slight trigger warning SA)

On the one hand you could interpret it as her calling her abuser a swine, which is the most popular interpretation. But then these lyrics don't make sense:

"Maybe I should have a little more just to stay out of my mind
'Cause it's when I'm not thinking of you that I act like a swine"

To me those lyrics change the whole meaning of the song. I've come to interpret it as her having a conversation with her addiction. The song could mean that she needs to get high to escape negative thoughts about herself (aka: she finds herself disgusting, unless she's high).

And then the following part could be the addiction talking, trying to 'seduce' her into using more:

"I know, I know, I know, I know you want me
You're just a pig inside a human body
Squealer, squealer, squeal out, you're so disgusting
You're just a pig inside"

That also matches her speech at ArtRAVE, where she talks about needing to 'rave' to express her anger and rage. And in the end it could all be related to her trying to process her trauma, circling back to her abuser being a swine.

It's convoluted, but it's the only way I can make sense of the changing perspectives in the song :laughga:

"Nothing's too cool to take me from you."

I made up my mind and thought of it as "Nothing is cool enough to take me from you."
