I think the Tainted Love Sample in SOS was used very effectively without the end product sounding too much like the original (looking at you, Ava Max and Megan Trainer)

I love how Janet samples her own past work. Especially the Control samples all over the Rhythm Nation album. They’re so good.

I think, in general, her catalog really aces sampling. She never relies on the sample to make the song interesting, but makes everything her own.

If, Rhythm Nation and Someone To Call My Lover are some of the best examples of that, imo.

Listening to If, you would never say it sounds like the Supremes but it uses that sample to add a wink and a nod to her musical influences. Much of the Velvet Rope album is the same. She bases that album on samples from her youth to revisit trauma based in her past to move forward. It's such a cathartic experience and incredibly innovative use of samples for storytelling.

Her, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are a powerhouse.

The only example in her discography that I would call a lazy sample (meaning it relies on the sample for the majority of it's interest and doesn't do much creatively) is R&B Junkie. Still fun but it's essentially the original with Janet on top.
