ok but this was recorded not too long ago and she was so emotional, surely between then and this airing she would have said something? ur showing me three tweets over the course of 8 years

It takes a special kind of person to make a tragic story about someone else being involved in a school shooting and losing 8 friends and STILL make it about yourself on a large public scale like that.

I get that maybe her emotions are coming from a real place but was just so beyond cringey and insensitive to do.

I’m not saying her reaction wasn’t genuine, but it was uncalled for. Now the headlines are about her.

Let people react they way they react. She’s a mom now so school shooting stories will scare her more now.  She had a genuine emotional response to a horrible story and a horrible ongoing situation in the US.  Honestly it’s absolutely brave to talk about gun control in the US because half the country is obsessed with them and demonize anyone who wants to control them.  She could very well alienate a chunk of her audience by passionately stating her views. I think it’s more virtue signalling to police how people react things and try to mansplain how “she should have reacted”.

I just don’t think this was the appropriate response, especially in front of an actual victim. Then again, that might be my European views speaking, but I’m having a big uncomfortable reaction to such a serious issue being turned into a buzzy TV moment. The fact she’s relaying it on Twitter with a broken heart emoji, like, really? An emoji? Hashtag American Idol?? I just think it’s indecent, but to each their own.

This is what reality TV talent shows are all like in the states.  A big reason I stopped watching America's Got Talent because the formula was built around the talent all overcoming something, which on paper is a really good thing, and it sounds harsh as I write critically about it.

This kind of strong emotion can’t be controlled. So anyone here saying she should’ve been more measured in her response - think of times when you’ve experienced an emotion so strong that you couldn’t contain it and it burst. I’m sure at that moment she didn’t think about how this would’ve been perceived, who she would alienate, etc. She was just spontaneously expressing her feelings. And yes, it was intense indeed - imagine the type of emotion she must have been holding down for so long.

Please… she was in front of an actual victim who was keeping it together. She’s an entertainer, this is what she does. I wish y’all weren’t so naive, but maybe it’s me who’s just a cynic.

This. I don't know why people are obsessed with policing how people react to these tragic events.

We react differently because human emotions are complex. Some of us react more controllably, others may get more emotional depending on their personal experience and who they fear for the most etc. Maybe motherhood is affecting her perception of this tragedy.

I know she’ll cop a lot of criticism for this but I found it totally moving and honestly, truthful. She echoed what countless Americans feel about the out of control gun issue in their country - nothing opportunistic or ‘showy’ about showing emotion and voicing her opinion re: this issue.

It’s not a virtue to “keep it together”. I really dislike people saying it’s better to keep your emotions bottled up.  Start normalizing being able to express your emotions.
