I don't agree that hate speech is violence nor do I think it should be censored by the gov't. It's our responsibility as citizens to hold each other accountable for hateful rhetoric, but I would never give the government the power to censor speech like that.

Verbal abuse is violence, my dude.

english is not my native language >.<

MELODEAN

This woman.. omg, how vile. She needs to be careful what she says, calling people these things will backfire on her, because most people will be furious about this even if they are not LGBTQ+. She will get hurt by someone!

This is obviously disgusting & very disturbing, but I can tell you it’s pretty common here. People are not as progressive and left in New York as most think. The literal only reason we are a blue state is because of NYC. Actual residents of NYC, a lot of them are more progressive thinking (a lot of the younger generation too, thank you to literally all of you who take initiative), but remember it’s a lot of visitors too not just from all over the world, but the tri-state, and especially where I’m from, Long Island. Long Island is unfortunately known to be an epicenter for rich, yt, suburbanite trumpies. I don’t know who the woman was, where she came from, if she’s a resident or visiting, but this was disgusting beyond. Reminds me of when BTW was coming out, during TMB days and it makes me sad. I really wish people would stop glorifying New York too as this glamorous, forward thinking, everyone is accepting type energy, amazing place all the time. It can be that at times, but for the most part, it is extremely over priced, you’re surrounded by many rude, selfish, and destructive individuals, etc. This kind of went on a tangent a bit, but it’s just in context that this behavior here does not shock me in the least. Literally makes me sick, but does not shock me.

Sam assumingely did that performance knowing there would be responses like that afterwards, but it still doesn’t warrant harassment like this or of any kind.

Omg girl I'm from Long Island too and know exactly what you're talking about. My hometown is Trump central. Where on the island are you from? I'm from Franklin Square in Nassau but live in Virginia now.

Victim blaming and making excuses for harassment isn't a different view. Stop with this nonsense. The fact that you think my reply is harassment is laughable.

And imagine NOT being invested in "this stuff" when this stuff is affecting so many queer people around the world.

Please hear me out, it's the tone you're applying to the message that caught my concern. I understand your message but think if you'd approach the other posters a little more calmly, it'd probably do wonders for getting them to evolve their view. Instead it sort of confirmed their concerns and just reaffirmed their original views.

I personally find terms like "laughable", "stop" and "nonsense" can come across as abrasive and patronizing. It's all very "masculine", for use of a better word.

The satanic stuff is what intrigues me.

The alt-right and traditional conservatives advocate for free speech and people needing a thicker skin but get horrified at people using satanic/demonic symbology when it's just for pop culture.

But then the woke left will exile anyone who dares "play" with a cultural or religious symbol, unless it's Christian and then they suddenly they're obsessed with freedom of expression.

It's too much hypocrisy, I swear they're just the same people.

The satanic stuff is just a modernization of the same anti-Semetic propaganda about the Jews secretly controlling the world/worshipping the devil/sacrificing children that was used to justify the Holocaust. They don't care about whether or not it's true, they care about whether or not it serves their interest to oppress their political opponents.

It's a combination of McCarthyist propaganda and the blood libel conspiracy in the form of QAnon, which has unfortunately taken hold of conservative politics across the globe.

Yeah it's definitely an alt-right thing that is bleeding over the internet and into the party. I've seen quite a few videos that start off subtle and then go into a hate tirade. It's remarkably clever if not very concerning. They always disguise it as something subtle like "think of the kids".

Weirdly enough, two of my coworkers were playing Sam Smith in the office and saying how they loved Unholy. But they're liberal conservatives that dragged Trump and populism, so there's hope there.

Oh that's really strange, I didn't know that was the link. Thanks for enlightening me!

I'll redact my original point to highlight that.

Thanks I appreciate it! :kara:

I'm not trying to be an pain and am sorry if it offends anyone but my brain just doesn't compute things the way most non-neurodivergent people do. My mind immediately spots what it perceives to be an inconsistency and it frustrates me. And then when I get "told off" it just sort turns me off. Had that issue all the time growing up!

But yeah I give full credit to Sam for doing their own thing. I just was commenting more on the divisions and similarities in how people feel they're always doing the right thing.

Honestly, don't feel bad. Some folks in this thread really love to patronize without hearing other people's arguments in good faith. If you're not 100% with them, you're against them; because that's how free thinking works, right? :ohwell:
