Christian Lindner said Germany had completely diversified its energy infrastructure since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Following the invasion, Russia turned off the gas taps to Europe, leading to fears of blackouts this winter. But Germany had found new sources of energy, Mr Lindner said. Germany previously imported around half of its gas from Russia and more than a third of its oil. But Russia cut off the country's gas supply in August, while Germany halted Russian oil imports at the start of the year. Yeah but what I mean is pure hydrogen barely exists on earth. U need energy to extract the hydrogen from water or gas. In essence that makes it a form of energy storage not a net energy creator What you can do is use surplus green energy like wind and solar to power the hydrogen extraction process so you can use it during intermittency. Or to fuel cars if we ever went that direction Basically same idea as stored hydro energy. Where they use surplus green power to pump up water somewhere high and then if there's a deficit they release it and gravity allows u to get back some of the power you put into pumping it up in the first place There's a limit to how efficient u can make these processes cuz of laws of physics. If u reach 100% efficiency in energy storage, u would get back the same amount you put into storing it. But you will never get back more than you put into it. Thermodynamics does not allow you to get more energy back than you put into it Since hydrogen works with atom and chemical reactions it may be possible to get some surplus energy back (because of naturally stored energy that is already there) if it got efficient enough I suppose. But I suspect probably not a lot, it would always mainly function as energy storage not a net source of energy because the process to break apart the bonds will always require a certain amount of energy fed into it Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
