It's still so beautiful :kara: I still don't understand how was this a "bad" performance? There's not a lot to critique on from this performance at all. Having a huge expectation and being underwhelmed won't equate it to being a bad performance :smh:

I'm fascinated by the fact that fans think that their opinion of the performance is somehow more valid than the son's opinion

Validity of one's opinion is independent from that aspect, it shouldn't be LMAO and his son is a disrespectful person, come on now:ohwell: The least they could've done is shut the **** up. It's not a BAD performance, it's not the worst thing that was ever performed, wake up

This performance is honestly one of the only times I've been genuinely disappointed in a Gaga performance. As much as David Bowie's iconography is well...iconic, it's also very much his and everyone, not just Gaga, who tries to replicate it always ends up coming off as cosplay. Nobody could do Bowie the way that Bowie could and to try and do it was setting one's self up for failure.

Tribute performances shouldn't be the tributer trying to recreate what the tributee has done. It pulls attention away from the person the tribute is for and puts it on the person who's delivering the tribute. I don't think that's what she intended by any stretch, but that's how it ended up coming off. It would've been much better if it had been simplified and if she'd maybe just referenced looks subtly rather than attempting to wear a Bowie type costume.

If it had a little more focus, if there wasn't so much going on, if there was a consistent theme to it other than "remember these Bowie songs??" then it could've been gorgeous and she was the perfect person to do it. It was just far too much and far too unfocused and uncharacteristically messy and listless as it came out.

I think her now could do a really brilliant tribute though.

I always wonder what the original performance was going to be, before Bowie passed away and they decided to do a tribute.

Does anybody know? I remember all the buzz around the use of Intel technology for a hyped up performance.

4th Time Around

The tribute performance was a letdown but the fact that everyone was talking about that rather than just appreciating the gesture towards a legend was upsetting to me as a Bowie fan. Looking back on it though, it would have been much better if Gaga had tried to do her own spin on a Bowie song rather than trying and failing to replicate him exactly.

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long

art, and awards performances alike, are subject to opinions and criticism

Of course. My point was that a son of a star should have no power deciding whether a cover of his father's song gets taken down from the internet.

The real reason is David Bowie's son wanted it taken down.  (i'm 99% about)

He definitely did not like it.

I resent him for it, and suspect it's because the inspiration he got from his dad did nothing compared to what it did for Gaga.

I doubt he had it taken down lmao how would he have the power for that lol

His response to the thing is that it happened right after his dad’s death, he wasn’t consulted about it or asked, and then it didn’t really express any gravity of Bowie’s legacy. It was kinda a manic party mashup of songs and Gaga doing a weird accent. I like it enough but far be it from me to judge how the family would feel in that moment. It especially wasn’t appropriate to make it a product showcase for Intel. Super cheap on their part even though I know they were already sponsoring the performance.

TBH the performance was weird bc not once did I feel like the man who just died was being regarded as a living, breathing person. It felt like when someone puts on an Elvis costume—it has basically nothing to do with Elvis’s person and just their iconic persona. Then add in some cheap product placement? To not even consult the family before doing this is a little tone deaf even if I understand what she was going for and the abridged timeline. Bowie was eccentric but he was very much human and at his death is probably the best time to acknowledge that.

it should have been a simpler tribute like others Gaga had done around then. One song, one outfit, maybe just the lobster eye ****, no Bowie accent schtick. Just very clean.
