I mean traditional catholics hate him so he's clearly moving against the grain. All religious sects have some sort of leader (though certain sects of Christianity such as Baptists for example don't really have one figure head but rather notable influencers). The Dalai Lama for example is to Tibetan Buddhists what the Pope is to Catholics. Where the Pope differs a bit to other religious leaders comes in two forms: 1. Catholicism is the most practiced religion in the world which gives the Pope a large sphere of influence. To Catholics, he is the closest living being to Jesus as the position of Pope is situated as being the successor of St. Peter, the head of the apostles. 2. Unlike most religious figures, the Pope is also a sovereign head of state. The Pope resides in Vatican City which is a small community in the middle of Rome that is recognized as an independent country.
