She knows she will be primaried out if she runs as a Democrat but by becoming an Independent she gives herself the best chance of staying in the Senate. She’s trying to stronghold the Democratic Party into supporting her or risk having a spoiler in the race in a state that can’t afford to lose a single vote. Hell, I think it might work. Democrats will have to watch polls on her to determine if Independents outright reject her to see if “waging war” against her is even worth it. I think a very real scenario here is that she keeps enough Independent support that running a Democrat all but hands the race to a Republican, so they choose to support her instead.
