Helena Bonham Carter has spoken out in defence of her former collaborators JK Rowling.

Carter appeared as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film franchise, based on the books by Rowling.

Speaking to The Times in a new interview, Bonham Carter said: “It’s horrendous, a load of b******s. I think [Rowling] has been hounded. It’s been taken to the extreme, the judgmentalism of people. She’s allowed her opinion, particularly if she’s suffered abuse.

“Everybody carries their own history of trauma and forms their opinions from that trauma and you have to respect where people come from and their pain. You don’t all have to agree on everything – that would be insane and boring. She’s not meaning it aggressively, she’s just saying something out of her own experience.”

I am saddened by this wow :bradley:

If any of you could actually read what is said here, y’all could sleep so much better not worrying all the time who to cancel next.
HBC says (at least in what’s above copied) that the entire cancellation is too far in her opinion. She doesn’t side with JKR believes… they were probably friends at some point and she might just speak out of that position, seeing someone you once liked getting dragged for ages, even if it has reason, it still must hurt somewhere seeing this.

Imagine her saying that Rowling "is allowed to have her opinion" or that "you don't have to agree on everything - that would be insane and boring" if it involved a racist or anti-Semitic argument. Imagine the outrage and the degree of disrespectfulness of such a statement. Well, it's the same when it comes to the trans issue.

what cancellation though? Harry Potter is about to release a major video game and JK will continue to make comfortable amounts of money from the widely beloved franchise

what has she actually suffered outside of twitter as a result of her actions?

mother, what must i do?

REALITY

It baffles me how people can see someone be a straight up blatant bigot and then say, "Well, but it's their opinion. Everyone has opinions, so she shouldn't be demonized for it." Like, transphobia, and bigotry of any kind, is not simply a "difference of opinion". So sad to see Helena defend her..

Death and rape threats and people showing up at her door to intimidate her.

Her opinions are vastly questionable, but it's hard to deny a line has been crossed more than once with her, and I believe Helena's reaction stems from that. Then again, journalists knew what they were doing by asking her about JK and Johnny Depp: one is a friend, the other the literal godfather to her children.

what exactly is Rowling's "trauma" around trans women? :madge:

i'm guessing it's more so about JK's trauma as a woman, and how she somehow thinks that all the progress towards trans inclusion takes away from her lived experience as said traumatized woman

Doesn't mean JK is right for it. just trying to understand where Helena is now coming from with her comment

Oh, no. Good luck Helena, your gay icon card has been revoked. Patti Lupone sang Ms. Lovett better anyway.

A wet cardboard box could sing it better.
