Is it morally dubious, certainly, but then again so is Banksy's line of work. Even though I love his art and the fact he sheds light on important issues, technically, he has nothing to say here. Also his reaction sits weirdly with me and the idea I had of him: you can call out a company, but that's another level of butt hurt if you ask me. Any original art an artist creates is automatically protected by copyright including street art but yeah Banksy is a bit more difficult because his anonymity makes it a lot harder and he's been in these kinds of situations before because of he'd need to reveal his identity which he wont do. They know he can't go after them without exposing his identity so they do it anyways. I looked it up a bit more and it seems like guess licensed the work through brandalised so I guess it's a matter if brandalised actually had the right to sell licenses of his work or not. But again he can't really prove their his works if he wants to stay anonymous
CautiousLurker 19,471
I like how people will say 'I like his work' and then proceed to disparage it in the same breath - being in illustration I see that a lot - I think people in general, even if they enjoy looking at illustrations, at least subconsciously resent people who draw/paint for a living, and will often side with people who steal their work. 'Get a real job' is a sentiment that gets expressed a lot when artists complain about their work being stolen. You see that in conversation surrounding AI art rn. I also think it's one of the reasons Blizzard continues to be massively successful still, despite all the stuff that came out about the company - people at best just do not give a sh*t about the artists who make the art they consume, and at worst they gleefully enjoy seeing artists being exploited and hurt for what they do. It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
