Good luck beating Hold My Ham which Rolling Stones named “The Straightest Ghey anthem of our Generation” :vegas:

If it wins its only because of the Disney machine and the emotive narrative surrounding the film. The song is cute but not memorarble or special IMO

Literally why :ladyhaha: It made no noise beyond its first couple of days... and it was mostly people disliking it

Soft, soothing, and succulent

I don't want to be mean but I would prefer We Don't Talk About Bruno over this.

I love Rihanna but that song is... meh.

i love rihanna but the song is nothing special lyrically or melodically.

the only reason it's getting this much oscar buzz is bc it's her "comeback" single after so many years.

hold my hand is way better and i'm not even being biased.

you can serve it to me ancient city style...

Encanto already lost this year to Billie and Finneas' No Time To Die. They submitted "Dos Oruguitas" before Bruno became a viral hit. They could submit that to Grammys though, dates are different for them. This is how Gaga won Song for Visual Media for both Shallow and next year for I'll Never Love Again, Shallow the single came out before the deadline and then the soundtrack after it.

She may win it if there are not any other strong nominees (I’m not counting Gaga, they won’t give her 2 oscars on a 5 year span) but the song is quite lukewarm tbh. I wish she had her Shallow moment with this so it could be more legitimate and impressive. This would still be a win for Rih but a bit meh tbh.

On another hand I don’t know if the Academy is that willing to hand in awards to female popstars (even in the song category). Grabbing an Oscar requires universal acclaim for everything you do (Adele), or incredible campaigning (Gaga-although having an undeniable hit helped her case a lot I think).

She will get the song for visual media grammy but about the Oscar - I don’t know. They may give to someone completely left field.

The song being a tribute for Chadwick Boseman will help her case though, that may change things.

Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?

Honestly the power of Rihanna tho. This is an honestly boring and forgettable song and yet the narrative around it being a huge hit and now an Oscar winner. Is pretty remarkable and if feels mostly tied to her massive celebrity.

Weren't there songs from the Elvis movie also in the run?

Lift Me Up was already rumored to get an Oscar before it was even released, so I'm not really surprised. I feel like it'll come down to Hold My Hand and Lift Me Up...and out of those two, I definitely prefer HMH. Maybe I'm stupidly paranoid, but I feel like winning for HMH would mess with an actress nom for Joker again.

I think Gaga will be nominated, but she won't win because she got it recently. If she wins, they want compensate her for the last year actress snub (if I remember correctly, the music branch nominates the songs, but everyone can vote in the final round).
The Black Panther/tribute/POC narrative speaks for Rihanna. If she doesn't win, both the song and the sequel movie was considered very weak.
Billie won last year and I don't think Taylor has much chance. I think Diane Warren now has even less chance than usual because of her lifetime award. If neither Rihanna nor Gaga, then maybe it will be someone, who has already written several good songs, but previously had no chance in the stronger years.

Hmmm I will take that with a grain of salt. The thing is I think Variety needs to understand that the Oscars is not the Grammys. I don’t think this is a strong song at all - it has been doing nice due to Rihanna’s comeback after so long, but honestly her comeback doesn’t mean a thing for the film industry.
I think the chances for this song to win will be only based on how the movie itself will perform. Predicting it before the movie is even out is so vain or do they think the award goes based on charts?

Got me thinking and its crazy how shallow was THAT song, it was playing everywhere, it really deserved that oscar. I haven't heard lift me up nor hold my hand get that much success. Nevertheless, hold my hand is way better than lift me up...
