It's her best pop album since 1989, and it's obviously doing well. But I do think she's figured out how to upsell better in a post bundle world and that helped the number be THAT big. Both things can be true.

I have a theory on why Midnights is seeing success that none of her previous albums have seen.

Taylor is cross generational. As in she was supported by fans born in the 80’s-90’s but now there’s an entire new generation like those born in the mid 2000’s who are invested in her. I think Midnights is a starting point for many new fans like those who are 18 & under (think of them as those who support Billie and Olivia), call them the tik tok gen z generation or wtv. Meanwhile she gained a more mature adult audience after folklore/evermore. So when you have 3 generations of people supporting an album, its bound to see sales/success.

Well deserved!

They also got the perfect timing to release this. Folklore and Evemore were surprise released and it was on streaming services and some CDs, LPs were released later. Same thing with Fearless and Red re-releases, they got the digital and CDs versions at one date and then months later the LPs.

I think they saw the potential this had because the fans were buying them. So this is the post folklore/evermore hype and fearless/red re-releases, now mix it with a "return" to the pop sound + 4 albums package that can make a clock. All digital, CDs, cassette, LP and 3 am editions released at the same time.

... in America

Ah, this old lie.

She is global now, sis. Which makes her success even more terrifying.

In my messy era.

I actually think the younger tiktok demographic jumped on ship because of Folkmore and the re-recordings. The 80s/90s babies and people like myself (born in ‘01 so I grew up with her music), have been pretty solidified and on board from the jump, but it took her really shaking **** up in how the GP sees her with those eras to allow the younger demo to see her as “cool enough” for them to grace her with their (parents’) money and streams.

The residual effects of those eras are similar to that for which Adele experienced from 21 in that everyone was at least somewhat on board for this new album cycle. It’s remarkable, and as a lifelong stan, it’s really fun to watch.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

Congratulations to her, she’s definitely the biggest force in the industry today. I honestly wish I liked her music, because I’d be living for it all. Just goes to show what hard work, consistency & quality result in.
