Is Gaga’s discography overrated?

So yeah, again I’ve never hated any of her songs, and I think I’ve been able to enjoy them all at one point, but looking back now it seems I’ve overhyped her discography and there’s not much that actually stands out. I’m saying this as a fan of many artists, when I compare her stuff to theirs most of it seems the same in terms of quality and edge. It seems that she shines best outside of her discography (for example in live performances).

I strongly disagree, sorry

I understand what you're saying and if anything I think it's because of a lack of content. It's actually crazy we still don't have a live album, acoustic album, or solo jazz album. Taylor released Folklore, then a deluxe version with more songs, then a live version of the album accompanied with the documentary. Imagine if we had the haunting acoustic versions of Paparazzi, Bad Romance, even Marry The Night on streaming. Or deluxe versions of albums with gems like Brooklyn Nights. Even if she did an album that was a callback to the Red & Blue days with that sound and reworked songs like No Floods. Some of her unreleased songs like 'The Greatest Thing' and obviously NOBTR could be huge if they were reworked.

Not even. People for the most part only know her big songs or the songs from the fame / monster unless they’re more than a casual fan

I agree with this tbh.

I love the artists I love because of who they are as people. And I stan them as overall entertainers and industry icons.

Gaga's music might be meh to some people but there's absolutely no denying that she's got the WHOLE package.

And you know what?

Not everybody has that :gayhat:

Wow I love this topic so much.

Proof that we can still have a critical conversation without attaching one another.

What is the metric of a good discography? The first three albums are flawless, even with their flaws. Oxymoron? No. The first 3 were astronomical natural events -they changed things and left huge marks. The first two sonically marvelous. Yes, even the debut, considering it was a debut of a commercial POP singer. Born This Way was uneven, badly edited and misunderstood, but it was a statement.

ARTPOP was an experiment went slight sour. Could’ve been her most authentic moment if she toned down the electronics and EDM a bit or replace them with more acoustic, natural sounds.

I truly think that Joanne is a mediocre album. Simply because there is no strong theatricals and atmosphere to make up for the lack of songwriting.

Chromatica is fun and safe.

The next one is the real TEST. It needs to be cohesive, it has to represent her past glories, and most importantly, it MUST offer a confident, detailed, layered, progressive sound. A true declaration it is!

Yeah no I can’t take this seriously.

Maybe the better question is: what songs in her discography (maybe more specifically her recent work) have been comparable to performances like these.

To me none of her past three solo albums (as collections of songs) have touched the talent and abilities Gaga has shown in her live performances (or even in her other work such as CTC or ASIB). It almost seems like everything but her solo career has evolved since BTW. ARTPOP, Joanne, and Chromatica at all great albums, but it’s hard to compare them to everything else she is doing music wise.

I understand what you are saying. I love her artistry, talent, and vocals, but I do agree, some of her music, by itself, doesn’t stand out as incredible. I love all her music, but because I have visuals, understanding of the meaning, and all of that which comes with an artist like Gaga. Tove Lo, for example, stands out as someone who produces exceptional pop music. She consistently, to me, produces pop music that takes me lyrically and sonically to a deeper place, without needing a live performance or music video to elevate it.

In saying that, Gaga is one of the most talented musicians and CONSISTENTLY proves to have the vocals, vision, and musical prowess of a legend. She also has MANY songs that are exceptional. But yes, I do agree; I think alot of her music doesn’t represent the talent she has.

THIS. It boggles my mind that she hasn’t released an acoustic album, considering she literally has an acoustic version for all of her hits :saladga:

I’m sorry I still don’t understand your point? You posted videos of her performing classic timeless songs minus a few. You’re saying her music is not as good as those songs? That’s your opinion but it doesn’t make her music overrated.

While I AGREE that she can no doubt perform live and that's where she really shines because it brings the story to life, I just don't understand how you can love her live performances but dislike her actual music.

Did you not see 5F2 where she so intricately creates everything from the music to the lyrics? She pours her heart and soul into the recording process, I'm confused as to how you can say that it's not great? Without the actual recorded music she wouldn't have made some of the most iconic pop songs of our generation.... it just doesn't make sense to me.

You can come for me about my comments questioning how much of a fan you are, but at the end of the day we're on a Lady Gaga fan forum.. if you don't like her... why are you here... lol

Again where have I said I dislike her music. I’m saying she has the potential to make better music. :koons: Her best solo album was made 11 years ago and I feel like her collaboration music (CTC, ASIB) has more quality.

To add to that I told you most of her music is on the same field as music I listen to by other artists and that I like. Idk how that screams “I dislike her music” to you.

She only has a few songs in her discography that actually stand out from other contemporary artists, despite the fact that she is extremely vocally talented (and one of the most versatile and creative artists of our generation). When you compare Chromatica to something like Crash they’re really not different in terms of quality (despite the fact that I enjoy both, and despite the fact that Gaga as an artist in general is much more experienced and capable musician). Idk how else I can explain it to you without you accusing me of disliking Gaga as an artist.
