2School4Cool 6,434
SO stoked about this! Not only does the song just strike a chord, it’s catchy beyond belief and it lives rent free in my mind, but what a victory for queer representation in music. A gender fluid and transgender artist currently share the number one song in America. This warms my heart See The Best In Everyone

Sam Smith hasn’t had a hit in the US since 2019, but has released many singles since. Kim hasn’t really been a mainstream artist, but I understand she has been trying to breakthrough and has a dodgy label. They made a snippet video while both sat in the studio booth jamming to the song, on TikTok. TikTokers started using the sound, 2 weeks previous to release. During the 2 weeks it was really viral apparently and many hashtags. So when they finally release the song it was already popular. So they wanted to hear it - and then the music video came too. Sam was also making videos on YouTube teasing the song. And then their normal fanbase hearing the new song - and this natural mix of artists. And also it's different from what Sam used to make. It's catchy AND short, ready for TikTok and to listen several times. ALSO I've been thinking that it's deemed controversial... And I'm feeling old - but actually I think it's something new for younger people (using TikTok as their preferred social media platform - we talking about 25 million under 18 year olds right now). Then maybe finally sent to radio too, and normal promo with interviews and performances. Idk if the song will still be #1 for next week, bc of Taylor's streaming power breaking records right now. I personally think we will get tired of Unholy but damn it's so catchy. The "oh daddy, daddy"-part is cringe. Also the "Oooh eh oh e ooo"-part cringe too. And honestly I think the chorus is very inspired in Beyoncés melody in Naughty girl song. See video under. There is a theory that also for us elder generation it instantly makes Unholy feel like we like the song from before - because it reminds us consciously of Naughty girl. Damn, that was a long response. I'm glad they hit #1 before Taylor.

MonsterofFame 1,785
When I first heard the song I didn't think it was that good. But the hooks and chorus stayed in my head... on repeat.. against my will. Now I like the song. This is what makes a pop song really good. Think about how many other hits are actually not too good sounding.. Rihanna's Work comes to mind.
MaybeKermit 4,898
Literally one of the most tacky and basic songs I ever heard… also, I wouldnt be proud if I were Kim because the only reason it became #1 was bcs of TikTok, and on Tiktok they only use the part of Sam singing lmao havent even heard Kim on the song anywhere on these tiktok videos
