We're unforunately getting there. Romania has the advantage of being Eastern, therefore it was less industrialized and the forests survived better.

The mountains are still wild and virgin to a greater extend than say, the Alps.

However, there is a big problem of illegal deforestation (supported by Austrian companies - ''the timber mafia''). 

If we have environmental activists on this site, I suggest you look into these things and become more vocal on the issue. EU needs to be pressured to regulate Austrian mafia.

Are you going to a big city (Bucharest, Cluj, Timisoara etc) or to a lesser known village in some touristic area? If so, in what region? (we have Transylvania to the west and north of the Carpathians, Wallachia south and Moldova east)

I wanted to give you a warning about trains getting delayed (which happens more often than ideally ), but I assume you will use other means of transportation (the car/ bus) so this won't be a problem.

I only transited Bucharest but, I can tell from the direction of the Bucharest North Train Station you can visit: the National Museum of Art of Romania, Cismigiu Parc, the Old Town, Stavropoles Monastery, Piața Unirii, The Patriarchal Cathedral, Palace of Parliament (very impressive size, the ''heaviest'' building and the third largest administrative civil building in the world, built by megalomaniac Ceausescu), Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History (most significant natural museum in Romania, lots of cool fossils) etc.

Note that this is only a suggestion to give you an idea of what you can find in Bucharest and how a touristic itinerary might look like, there are lots of tourist objectives in the city. For exemple there is also Arcul de Triumf and "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum. The museum is amazing and will give you a taste of the architecture and traditional Romanian way of being (website says there will be a temporary exposition of hope chests until October 30 - https://muzeul-satului.ro/en/events/lada-de-zestre/). Assuming you come from a Protestant/Evangelical, Catholic etc background I suggest you visit some churches in Bucharest (many are of historical value and open all through out the day). Seeing the Orthodox iconostasis, the dom, entire walls of Byzantine style frescoes will certainly give you a foreign and ''exotic eastern'' feeling (I won't post pictures so you will be able to experience it first hand). 

Google Maps will certainly help you pick and choose the specific monuments/ museums that you want to see and can get to. Also keep in mind that Thursday will be the feast of the city and I suspect the city will be especially crowed this day. I visited Rome a while back and I regret not making of a specific list that I wanted to see, if you are more adventurous and oriented on feeling the moment you may see things differently, but looking back I regret not planning my trip more down to the details because I missed interesting objectives that were easily accesible.

On the way to Brasov be prepared to take pictures of the Carpathians!

Oh Wow!! Thank you so much for this info!!! We were planning on taking the train, but I suppose taking the bus might be a better option now...

This week (Thursday) there will be an important pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Bucuresti (people go to venerate the relics of St Dimitrios the New who is the protector of Bucharest). So, I think there is a possibility the train itself will be crowed (then again this could apply to the bus too, so - I suggest you try to buy train/ bus tickets in advance).
