The server apologized, we told her no worries. We enjoyed our meals, I tipped 30% on a nearly $60 tab, and we moved on with our day. Mistakes happen. You never know when it's someone's first day or they've got their mind somewhere else because of something personal. You should never allow yourself to be one more negative part of their day to think about when they get home. It's a hard enough job as it is without having rude customers who either raise hell or don't tip because of little mistakes. They don't make the food. And the whole "tips should be earned" thing is so gross. Servers work for less than minimum wage and get most of their pay through tips. Sure, if a server is rude or nasty, then don't tip. Being a server is a highly stressful and underpaying job, it's not just writing things down and walking food to a table. The only thing that is gross here is the employer not paying them enough also what i said was not gross its a simple fact

Fresco 1,688
I tend to eat in fast food restaurants, where there is no tipping of any kind. The elitist servers in this thread should really think about if they want to be McDonalds employees that make the same food day after day for a wage, no bonus, and no tips. I also had an experience that made me to expensive restaurant waitresses. I was in a lull at the time, years ago making $11/hour in a call center, no bonus, no tips. $88 a day. Met a waitress complaining about some rude customer at the fancy restaurant that complained. She didn't make her usual $250 in 3 hours like normal. I was like, Met another bartender bragging about getting men drunk and they would leave big tips, $20's. Since then, I have been much less concerned about tipping. TylerMedeiros 741
I work for one of the finest high end dining restaurant in the US. I’m not bragging it’s just what they’re known for. We get many high profile guests and celebrities. What I will say is this: My father always taught me that money doesn’t buy you class. He’s always said, “money talks, wealth whispers.” And now I get what he meant. the celebrities I’ve taken care of and the ultra-rich clientele, they’re the kindest low maintenance guests that we have. It’s a pleasure to take care of them. And they tip BIG. one of my celeb regulars makes me feel so at ease - and I get big hugs from them when I see them. They care to ask me about myself and my family. It truly has blown my mind. While also instilling confidence in me. So when I have a guest who is impossible to please, I have developed thick skin. I love hospitality it’s who I am l. I am so proud of that restaurant owner to defend his staff. This is just my opinion, but I believe the owner accepted the apology because no body is perfect - but also puts JC on notice that if he ever behaves that way again - he will be banned permanently and removed from the establishment. still speaks volumes about who JC truly is. Doubt he’d apologize if it wasn’t for the owner publicly speaking out. It was damage control. But now he’s checked! No amount of money or fame makes it acceptable to treat people poorly. None. Edit: btw I do take care of rich people and average people who are terrible. Or people who can’t afford to dine there but want to be “seen” so after they get their social media pics, they complain about every friggin thing. Many don’t tip, or they leave like 10%, and treat you poorly. Whether you’re rich or not, be rich in character y’all YEET
StrawberryBlond 14,266
Perhaps if more restaurants called out their irksome celebrity clients, there would be less entitled attitudes. Diva celebrity attitudes in restaurants have been an unspoken reality for years, but only in the form of rumours being spread from staff and in a lot of cases, we take them with a grain of salt because some sound so OTT and the employee maybe just doesn't like them and is making it up to make them look bad. But I have no doubt that some are true and James has had a reputation of being big headed behind the scenes for quite some time now. They say that you should watch how someone treats service workers as it's a good example of who they really are. I hope this encourages more restaurants to name and shame celebrities who think that it's ok to treat people badly if they're deemed to be beneath them. They shouldn't be afraid of losing custom - I stan a restaurant that supports its staff (sadly, to some establishments, the staff are never in the right and easily replaceable) and celebrities with the right attitude will have nothing to fear. By the way, @Fresco, I understand the point you're making and sympathise with your bad experiences. I think you've been sadly misunderstood in this thread. You clearly aren't rude to staff, you just quietly decide not to tip if your experience didn't work out as it should, which you are perfectly within your right to do. I just feel your points didn't come across well in a thread such as this. We once discussed the subject of tipping and how necessary it is in a thread and your points would've been more understandable there. Speaking as someone who has only worked in minimum wage retail and therefore don't receive tips (the rare times a customer tells us to keep the change, we have to put it in the charity box) and I find it odd that we're supposed to be all about supporting minimum wage workers but when we say that, we're really just talking about restaurant staff and public transportation workers. Most other minimum wage jobs don't have a tipping culture and shouldn't we be all about consistency of support? And I certainly believe that a tip you've genuinely earned because a customer thought you did your job exceptionally is worth so much more than a tip that was given out of obligation or lack of choice regardless of the quality of service. There's even some countries were tipping is considered offensive, so it is a cultural thing. Absolutely the working wage should be increased and some establishments do pay their staff more but we're far from an ideal world where they all do that. Also, if an employee is allowed to make mistakes because they're having a bad day, why can't the customer also be having a bad day so tipping isn't really on their list of priorities? So, yeah, your views may be controversial, but they've been made out to be far worse than they actually are.

If a server doesn't make enough money, they just have to find a job somewhere else. If a server messes up my table, . Tell the forum you’ve never worked food service without directly telling them you’ve never served food ^^^^^ You make the choice to go eat at a restaurant and have someone wait on you hand and foot, like you said, just go to McDonald’s and get cheap, fast food handed to you for you to unwrap and clean up yourself. Maybe you made the wrong choice working for $11/ hr when you could’ve been dealing with a**holes all day but taking home hundreds of dollars. I and probably 90% of other servers, bartenders, etc. will never apologize for making such good money when we spend 10+ hours on our feet waiting hand and foot on often ungrateful and irrational customers. Imagine making the conscious choice to allow someone to wait on you hand and foot doing basic things that you can do just the same on your own at home, then being shocked when you’re expected to pay for such service. And no, the restaurant can’t simply start paying their servers enough to get rid of tips: A. That’s physically impossible for most employers, they could never keep up with what we’ve gotten used to and expect for dealing w this s*it, B. Okay, the employers get rid of tips, guess where that money that you would’ve used to tip and actually pay the person doing the work would go? Your meal price. This post seriously p*ssed me off because after the pandemic where literally going to a fancy restaurant for a $15 martini and $50 steak was considered essential, people still have this stupid misunderstanding regarding tipping and still have no appreciation for people who simply do the service you volunteered to receive As far as the last paragraph, unless your server is a total imbecile, most things people actually blame your server for isn’t their fault. No, your server didn’t set the prices. No, your server didn’t create the system, they’re simply smart and lucrative enough to do the work for the amazing payout. No, it’s not your fault your restaurant ran out of x. No, it’s not your servers fault that they stood on the hot a*s food line waiting for your dinner berading the miserable, underpaid cooks and they handed them the wrong item. No, it’s not your servers fault you sat down in that seat and volunteered/ expected them to wait on you hand and foot for about an hour British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS

ImMatt 1,664
I think people need to understand different countries have different expectations when it comes to tips. From what I understand in the US it's considered rude to not tip, whereas in the UK its unusual to tip. As someone from the UK I find it weird how tipping is expected across the pond...I mean I don't tip the postman for delivering my post or bar staff when I buy a beer? Anyway, not surprised to see James Corden reach out to the owner. I wonder if he'll actually ever eat in the restaurant again though

The people that choose these jobs must like it. I would suggest a higher minimum base rate to be required for all restaurants and then tips can just be bonuses. But I doubt that will happen. Time is money, mistakes are expensive. Somebody ends up paying for it. If someone can't get an order right and walk it to the correct table, maybe it's the wrong job for that person. I'm not their entire paycheck, usually just one table out of many. Screw up my table no tip, hopefully they did the others correctly.
