With hindsight only, zero interaction of any kind with racketeering R Kelly.

No release of DWUW, not even solo. Bury that rapist invitation. Replace it with award winning, anti-rapist, til it happens to you.

Don't release swine, at all, and don't call your fans swines. Though some clearly deserve it.

Cut the opening of aura with the killing of former, yikes, don't open with that crazy line.

Find a song to fill.

ARTPOP is lead single.

I can't believe in 2022 we are still having variations of this thread :laughga:   I've seen it so many times!

That being said...

- No R Kelly. Either solo version or another feature

- Controversial but... no Jewels & Drugs. It caused too much divide in the fanbase and some of the features ended up being criminals too (can't remember the exact details so don't quote me lol)

- Sticking to the original singles plan. Releasing Applause a week after Roar NOT the same week (this was the beginning of the end for this era). Then following with Venus as originally intended (showing her versatility with pop and then something more alternative). Then probably DWUW because people liked that song. Then she probably would've been allowed to do a 4th and maybe 5th single. I wanna say MANiCURE and Gypsy would've been smart choices

- I also think Brooklyn Nights deserved a place on ARTPOP

- The rest of it would've literally run smoothly and been fine had we not had the messy single rollout and the controversies. It was all just downhill right from the get go and Gaga was left fighting to get singles out and music videos off the ground. With smooth singles rollout we would've been fine

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I don’t think management would have been able to do anything differently, I think Gaga was very much in control and was trying maybe a little too hard to avoid being put in a box.

However, If I were Gaga, I would have spent more time fleshing out the app and made it the medium for a visual album and in depth interviews about its creation, delaying the album release a bit if necessary.

I’d do much less interviews, and in them I’d have clarified that the concept was about not selling out and artistic expression instead of claiming it was about a “reverse Warholian expedition”. I’d have skipped the YouTube awards and the Muppets, but kept the VMAs, AMA’s, The Voice, iTunes Festival, SNL, the ArtRave, and even SXSW. Basically, I’d have tried to be appear more enigmatic (in keeping with the album’s theme) by more or less dropping an ARTPOP visual album, rather than an over-the-top promotional campaign, and keep the focus on performances.

As far as the music, I’d have removed Jewels N Drugs, added rap verses to MJH and Sexxx Dreams, and switched DWUW R.Kelly with DWUW Xtina. I would have reordered the tracklist. And for singles I would have done Applause, DWUD, Venus (promo), Sexxx Dreams, Gypsy, and Manicure.

at the end of the day, ARTPOP was never going to be seen as groundbreaking or successful compared to her previous albums. She was overexposed and the haters were pressed.

1) Not released Applause at the same time as Katy Perry releasing Roar, thus causing a fan battle which ultimately impacted the sales of Applause. Katy Perry was also at the top of her game at the time so wasn't a wise choice.

In all fairness, Gaga and Katy wasn’t supposed to be competing for first week sales on the charts.  Applause was brought forward a week because the unmastered final version leaked and they didn’t want hype to die down.

Releasing the album in 2014, and work on it in a calm way during her recovery. After that, release two volumes as she planned, the second one prepared to be released six months after the first one. And, I guess, replacing JND, Fashion! for some Act II song and DWUW with the Xtina version.

Before writing this, I've been thinking about this quite a lot recently this is probably going to my longest post I've ever written on GagaDaily so I'm sorry in advance :ohwell: saying that, I do understand ARTPOP was never going to replicate the success of her past albums for a number of reasons, but I do think this release could've been handled a lot more smoothly if a number of things were amended...

1). First things first, allow Gaga to heal from her surgery. To me, the saddest part of ARTPOP is that Gaga wasn't in an environment where she could heal at home and fully realise the album's concepts, visuals and performance ideas whilst rested and in a safe mental headspace. For example, I remember her posts on LittleMonsters back in the day about the Applause and DWUW videos being rushed as she didn't have time to heal and articulate her ideas without pressure from Troy, her team and label. Therefore, time would allow her ideas to flourish and she would feel more confident in her work, the album's message and her integrity as an artist  - all of which was sadly questioned and dissected during the album's release, but could've been avoided.

2). Continuing on from the previous point, I would've given her February - September 2013 to heal and work on her concepts, visuals and performance ideas and then September to December to shoot the singles (see below) and music videos, filming with Inez and Vinoodh, Marina Abramov, Jeff Zoons and Robert Wilson - really focusing on those four artists for multiple projects throughout the era. I would then give Gaga time to rest during the Christmas period again and prepare for release of the album in spring of the New Year. Therefore, avoiding any conflicting releases with Katy's 'Prism' and also Beyonce's self-titled release at the end of 2013. Taylor's '1989' isn't released until 2014 October but is also the antithesis of ARTPOP, whereas Katy and Gaga are more similar as artists and Prism and ARTPOP's releases felt more synced at the time, unfortunately pitting them as competitors.

3). Thirdly: no R.Kelly and no Terry Richardson. This doesn't need explaining but it would've avoided the firestorm of chaos and bad press that ensued and it took away from the incredible message of the song. I like the suggestions for R.Kelly's replacements so far that have been said, especially Bruno Mars! That would be cool, but overall I do think Xtina is the perfect collaborator for the song. Their The Voice performance is mesmerising and still gives me chills, it would've been a massive **** you to Perez Hilton at the time who berated Xtina for years and finally the song fits Xtina's relationship with the press and trajectory as an artist and her successes (and failures) throughout her career. Furthermore and I think this is something people miss out, whilst Xtina's solo albums began to flop after Bionic, she became a hit-feature at the time with smashes like Moves Like Jagger (2011), Say Something (2013) and Feel This Moment (2013), it was stupid not to have her included from the beginning.

4). I personally didn't mind the over-exposure with the performances and interviews we got because it meant Gaga content and there was so many iconic moments that come to mind: 'Applause' performance at the VMA's, Saturday Night Live, SXSW, the ArtRave and the Graham Norton all come to mind as highlights. Below, I've changed the timeline of the album/singles release so SwineFest isn't really possible, but instead her residency at Roseland would work as a replacement for the 2013 iTunes Festival performance. However, I would reduce the amount of ARTPOP tracks performed at Roseland/Swinefest and only include Applause, Aura (as they'd have been released singles by this point) and then ARTPOP and Swine as the only album tracks to make the setlist. The rest of the setlist would be compiled of hits and an odd deep cut which could change every night of the residency. I feel this because performing so much of ARTPOP at Swinefest allowed fans to hear earlier versions of the songs and therefore experience disappointment once the finalised versions of the songs arrived.

5). I wish she/Troy just went full force with the app, it could've been an great medium to keep fans happy (also avoiding over-exposure with the GP) by releasing a new song each month, an occasional music video from the album every four months, behind-the-scenes content and interviews with not just Gaga and her experiences about creating the album, but also producers and co-writers etc. ARTPOP, G.U.Y., MANiCURE and Mary Jane Holland would get video treatment and only be available on the app, one released every four months.

She had enough songs to release one a month off the app for a year after the album's release (I've chosen 2014 May below) and it could've gone something like this:

Spoiler

2014 MAY: The Stage
2014 JUNE: Hallelujah + ARTPOP (Music Video)
2014 JULY: Tinnitus
2014 AUGUST: Nothin' On But The Radio
2014 SEPTEMBER: Onion Girl
2014 OCTOBER: I Don't Want Your Love + G.U.Y. (Music Video)
2014 NOVEMBER: Maren
2014 DECEMBER: Cake Like Lady Gaga + Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe (two as a Christmas treat)
2015 JANUARY: T.E.A.
2015 FEBRUARY: Sire + MANiCURE (Music Video)
2015 MARCH: Red Flame (without Azealia)
2015 APRIL: Sire
2015 MAY: In Like With You
2015 JUNE: Temple + Mary Jane Holland (Music Video)

6). An 18-track album. Gaga was a huge popstar, there's no way her label couldn't finance an 18-track album, especially when she's mentioned having 90 songs recorded. I would've added Brooklyn Nights, Partynauseous (with Kendrick Lamar) and Princess Die to the original tracklist and replaced R.Kelly with Xtina, as mentioned before. I also would've kept Jewels N Drugs (sorry not sorry) but changed the rappers to all-female 90's rappers and added Beyonce to Aura, therefore fulfilling the trilogy of Paparazzi/Telephone/Aura. In addition, I would've added RuPaul onto Fashion - I think the Muppets performance is so camp and absurd that if ever a Gaga album were to include a RuPaul feature, this is the album!

IDEAL TRACKLIST:

Spoiler

01. Aura (with Beyonce)
02. Venus
03. G.U.Y.
04. Sexxx Dreams
05. Do What You Want (with Christina Aguilera)
06. Jewels N Drugs (with DaBrat, Eve & Lil Kim)
07. MANiCURE
08. Brooklyn Nights
09. ARTPOP
10. Swine
11. Partynauseous (with Kendrick Lamar)
12. Donatella
13. Fashion! (with RuPaul)
14. Mary Jane Holland
15. Dope
16. Princess Die
17. Gypsy
18. Applause

7). As for the singles, she didn't have a traditional 'Poker Face' or 'Bad Romance' on her hands, instead of worrying about that. I think her/her team should've played into the ARTPOP concept and released singles in that order, one being ART: more experimental and odd i.e. Aura and then releasing the next single after it being POP: more radio-friendly and palatable for the general public, i.e. Do What You Want. This would've caught the attention of radio and public and enticed people into buying the album and discovering all of the sounds and genres it offers. I also think it gave the hits (Applause, DWUW and Gypsy) a chance to succeed commercially whilst also giving more avant-garde, experimental work (Aura, Venus, Sexxx Dreams) a platform from such a huge commercial artist. My strategy for singles releases are as follows:

1. AURA with Beyonce (released 14th January 2014)

Spoiler

Yes, an unpopular choice I know but I would've chosen Aura as the first single and it would serve as the ART part of the ARTPOP singles pattern. Firstly, re-introducing the world to Gaga again with "Do you wanna see the girl behind the aura?" after she hasn't released music for 3 years, has been resting after surgery and keeping quiet is so badass to me. It screams I'm back and I'm ready. I would've loved the a video by Robert Rodriguez, after his work on Rain On Me and how he perfectly captured Gaga and Ariana, I believe he could do the same with Beyonce and Gaga and give us those Machete Kills vibes also.

Secondly, it is the quintessential ARTPOP track to me. It's loud, brash, unapologetic, fearless, enigmatic - all of these traits I attribute to the album as a whole, so would also work as a great introduction into the world of ARTPOP. Thirdly, it would've completed the Paparazzi and Telephone trilogy as Gaga intended and gave us another GaBeyonce moment. Furthermore, Beyonce just released a whole album in December 2013 so the attention from that could've translated into Aura's release, this could be seen as naive and shallow I know but it has to be thought about.

Performances: The 56th Grammy Awards Show, The Voice US, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Today Show, South By South West 2014, On Air with Ryan Seacrest, The 2014 UK Brit Awards, The Jonathon Ross Show (UK), KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Ball.

Australia: #14
Canada: #6
France: #11

New Zealand: #19

2. APPLAUSE (released 11th March 2014)

Spoiler

Applause's power is undeniable: it's Gaga's biggest radio hit, spent 14 weeks in the US Top 10 and has become a classic in her discography. Therefore I would release it as the second single off of the album, serving it as the POP part of the ARTPOP singles pattern. As much as I love the video we have, I still would've like to have seen the original concept without time restrictions, directed by Inez & Vinoodh. Maybe some fo the same elements from the video we have in it would be included, maybe not? There's not much to say about how I'd change this because it was the smoothest single release of the era. Again, I'd love to see her original VMA concept but with it being released in March, it would probably have to be performed on something like SNL or The Voice UK maybe.

Also if Aura did flop immensely, Applause would get Gaga back in favour with radio, the GP and her fans.

Performances: Saturday Night Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Good Morning America, The Howard Stern Show, SXSW 2014, Thanksgiving Muppets Special, The Voice UK, BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, SMAPxSMAP, Music Station, Sukkiri!!, KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Bell Ball.

Chart Peaks:
US: #2
UK: #3
Australia: #5
Canada: #1
France: #3
Germany: #1
Italy: #3
Ireland: #1
Spain: #1
Japan: #9
New Zealand: #2

3. VENUS (released 12th May 2014)

Spoiler

For the third and fourth single, I would've released Venus (as the ART part of the ARTPOP pattern) and Do What You Want (as the POP part of the ARTPOP pattern). I would've released them as separate singles but a week apart, similar to Beyonce's release of 'If I Were A Boy' and 'Single Ladies' which were released five days a part. Gaga is clearly enthusiastic about this song and she's so proud of it given she's the only producer, so I think it's worthy of a single release. Plus this could've been one of Gaga's best videos of all time and although it may not of been a mega-hit, it would certainly have cultural value like Judas and how memorable that song/video is to fans and the GP alike, despite not being as huge as her other singles.

The video would've been directed by Ruth Hogben as originally planned. I don't imagine Venus would've set the charts alight and probably would've been ignored by radios, but an epic video and momentum for DWUW/the album would've helped keep it afloat on the Billboard Top 100 for a while. I think with time, this would've become one of her most memorable songs and is already a staple in gaybars/clubs around the world, but with a single release would give it even greater mass appeal.

Performances (mashed up with DWUW): American Idol, Billboard Music Awards, The Oprah Winfrey Show, BBC's Radio 1's Big Weekend, Britain's Got Talent, Alan Carr's Chatty Man (UK), France's X Factor, Le Grand Journal (France), Germany's Next Top Model, Thanksgiving Muppets Special (not including DWUW), KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Ball.

Chart Peaks:
US: #10
UK: #11
Australia: #25
Canada: #7
France: #31
Germany: #20
Italy: #33
Ireland: #9
Spain: #8
Japan: #16
New Zealand: #42

4. DO WHAT YOU WANT with Christina Aguilera (released 19th May 2014)

Spoiler

As mentioned above, Do What You Want would be the fourth single and act as a somewhat double release with Venus - it's the clear hit of the album and had the potential to be a worldwide smash. It managed to achieve top 10 peaks in Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom with that sexual predator on the song, imagine the power it would've had with Christina on it. Plus, as cringe as it sounds girl power anthems were taking off at this point: Bang Bang (Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj), Fancy (Iggy Azelea & Charli XCX) and Really Don't Care (Cher Lloyd and Demi Lovato), so there was a demand for the female collaboration in popular music and in my opinion DWUW is better than all these songs mentioned, imagine the damage it would've done.

I think Gaga should've directed the video, she was clearly capable of it given her work on G.U.Y. (An ARTPOP Film) and Marry The Night, by this point. It would've made perfect sense for her to direct or co-direct with Ruth again, I think either would be magic and added to the message of the song. I also think this could've been as big as Applause on US radio, if not bigger given how catchy it is and how well Christina was received at radio on features at the time.

Performances (mashed up with Venus): American Idol, Billboard Music Awards, The Oprah Winfrey Show, BBC's Radio 1's Big Weekend, Britain's Got Talent, Alan Carr's Chatty Man (UK), France's X Factor, Le Grand Journal (France), Germany's Next Top Model, KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Ball.

----------------------'ARTPOP' Album Release (released 26th May 2014)-----------------------

I've mentioned the album as a whole beforehand, but I'd sell the album with tour bundles for the ArtRave: ARTPOP Ball to make the 1.1b first week sales of BTW seem less dramatic to the 258k first week sales of ARTPOP. This is no longer allowed I think thanks to Travis vs Nicki (maybe it is, but I thought Billboard ruled it out), but I think she could've easily made 350-450k first week sales if she included tour bundles, which would also keep the hype and momentum for the era alive.

5. SEXXX DREAMS (released 18th August 2014)

Spoiler

For the fifth single and first post-album release single, I'd choose Sexxx Dreams. This would serve as the ART part of the ARTPOP singles pattern run. I also think DWUW would carry the commercial success of the album and keep the album's success afloat so Sexxx Dreams would be more of Gaga experimenting on the commercial pop mainstage. However I do think it could be a small top 20 hit in a few countries like the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Yes, it would be a controversial choice but this is Gaga's most rebellious era, the theme of sex is consistent from Venus/DWUW being prior singles and I don't think the GP are familiar with Gaga's seductive, sultry and slower songs. I could also see this song taking off on TikTok years later if only Gaga had pushed it as a single, especially the talking part. I think the live performances would be so intriguing too especially if performed at the VMAs and SYTYCD, just imagine the uproar and attention the song/album would gain.

Performances: MTV VMAs, So You Think You Can Dance? Jimmy Kimmel Live!, iHeartRadio's Music Festival, KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Ball.

6. GYPSY (released 9th November 2014)

Spoiler

For the sixth and final single of the era, I'd choose Gypsy. It's clearly a radio smash in waiting and would be the final POP single of the ART-POP pattern release. It's often been compared to TEOG and I think it would be a great album seller in the long-run, which would be helpful at the tail end of the era and lead up to Christmas.

I think for the video, Gaga should do something she'd never do before and use the app to advertise a chance for a fan to direct the video, they'd have to provide a treatment, storyboards, concepts and work with a professional director to co-direct the video. I think it's perfectly fitting for the song and also encourages her fans creating art. After this, fans can then share their concepts on the app and create buzz around the release. Despite being a sixth single, I believe Gypsy could do quite well as a commercial single and the multiple performances would allow Gaga to showcase those pipes (something Gaga still wasn't fully appreciated for at this point until Cheek To Cheek, Til It Happens To You and the Oscar's Sound of Music performance).

Performances: American Music Awards, The View, iHeart Music Festival, Thanksgiving Muppets Special, X Factor UK, Royal Variety Performance (UK), Graham Norton, UK's Children In Need, MTV European Music Awards, Australia's X Factor, Sunrise Australia, SMAPxSMAP, Music Station, Sukkiri!!, KIIS-FM Jingle Ball/iHeart Media's 2014 Jingle Ball.

Chart Peaks:
US: #13
UK: #14
Australia: #10

France: #24

Ireland: #11

New Zealand: #12

8). Going forward, I'd use the US+UK festival circuit in the summer of 2014 to fine-tune what the ArtRave: ARTPOP Ball could be and then begin the tour in September 2014 and finish in May 2015, with a live tour DVD available by the end of 2015 for Christmas that year. Essentially the schedule for Cheek To Cheek would just be pushed back a year with it being released in the Autumn of 2015, as opposed to 2014 and TIHTY would remain the same.

The songs being released on the app throughout 2015 would still give fans PopGa, whilst the C2C era commences and allows her to show her Jazz side. Other 2015 highlights would include: the tour and accompanying DVD bundle for Christmas, TIHTY at the end of 2015, AHS: Hotel and the Sound of Music performance at the Oscars. I imagine the app would then be deleted by 2016 and all of the songs and videos would be transferred onto Spotify and Youtube.

Anyway, hope you all like this and understand some of my decisions/delusions! I just think this would've been way more enjoyable / less controversial / gives the album the respect and treatment it deserves!

  Hide contents

2014 MAY: The Stage
2014 JUNE: Hallelujah + ARTPOP (Music Video)
2014 JULY: Tinnitus
2014 AUGUST: Nothin' On But The Radio
2014 SEPTEMBER: Onion Girl
2014 OCTOBER: I Don't Want Your Love + G.U.Y. (Music Video)
2014 NOVEMBER: Maren
2014 DECEMBER: Cake Like Lady Gaga + Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe (two as a Christmas treat)
2015 JANUARY: T.E.A.
2015 FEBRUARY: Sire + MANiCURE (Music Video)
2015 MARCH: Red Flame (without Azealia)
2015 APRIL: Sire
2015 MAY: In Like With You
2015 JUNE: Temple + Mary Jane Holland (Music Video)

6). An 18-track album. Gaga was a huge popstar, there's no way her label couldn't finance an 18-track album, especially when she's mentioned having 90 songs recorded. I would've added Brooklyn Nights, Partynauseous (with Kendrick Lamar) and Princess Die to the original tracklist and replaced R.Kelly with Xtina, as mentioned before. I also would've kept Jewels N Drugs (sorry not sorry) but changed the rappers to all-female 90's rappers and added Beyonce to Aura, therefore fulfilling the trilogy of Paparazzi/Telephone/Aura. In addition, I would've added RuPaul onto Fashion - I think the Muppets performance is so camp and absurd that if ever a Gaga album were to include a RuPaul feature, this is the album!

IDEAL TRACKLIST:

  Hide contents

2. APPLAUSE (released 11th March 2014)

US: #2
UK: #3
Australia: #5

Japan: #9

3. VENUS (released 12th May 2014)

  Hide contents

Italy: #33
Ireland: #9
Spain: #8

New Zealand: #42

4. DO WHAT YOU WANT with Christina Aguilera (released 19th May 2014)

  Hide contents

  Hide contents
