Minaj originally submitted “Super Freaky Girl”— which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in August — to the rap categories at the Grammys, but the decision was overturned by the Recording Academy’s rap committee. That group determined that Minaj’s playful and pop-sounding song sampling Rick James’ 1981 classic “Super Freak” should compete for best pop solo performance instead of rap awards.

I guess it makes sense being it's primarily a pop song. Did this happen with Superbass etc? Idk if that was ever nominated tho :air:

If this is true then we can expect a messy conspirancy tweet from her in a couple minutes/days

But i thought grammys didnt want nothing with her, i mean she is one of those rumours artist that hasnt won a grammy because there is some kinda thing going on backstage with someone at the grammys, something similar with Katy

Quizás bastaba respirar, sólo respirar, muy lento...💙

I can see both sides because the beat is very pop and even though the verses and chorus are technically her talking and not singing, it's very slow for rap and very melodic. It's borderline singing. She really only raps in the bridge. But I get her perspective too.

Tbh SFG is just not that great either way. I don't see how it could win in any category. Nicki has so much more potential than that song.

*spends 8 weeks on top of the rap charts*

It's clearly pop-rap but as pointed out, a lot of past winners and nominees have been pop-rap. Even this year Latto is up for a nomination with Big Energy, that has the same producer.

I actually think this could end up working in her favour though. If DWHAP is nominated she won't be competing with herself and voters might actually vote to recognise not just the song, but Nicki's catalogue and what she's achieved in her career.
