There didn't seem to be any justification for sticking with Lightning except the license fees they charged for third party accessories. Which, as a design criterion, was really tacky. As a previous Apple Store employee, the majority of iPhone users are not as tech savvy and most would think and it’s often the only Apple product they have. Something about a phone is so personal to people that they are rabidly defensive over it. The change from 30-pin to lightning port was an absolute sh*tshow and the amount of full on temper tantrums and meltdowns by grown a** adults in the store was embarrassing. We had people returning iPhones because they got home and realized all their old docks and chargers don’t work with it and they wouldn’t accept a dongle. A move that big is almost on par with changing the power outlets in a house. People have bought so many lightning cables over the years, not to mention third party accessories, portable chargers, etc. Of course, that no reason not to make the change, but I understand why Apple is slow to do so. My take has always been that Apple was wanting the iPhone’s next port to be NO port, and force the fully wireless vision they’ve had for decades.
