Her, MJ, George Michael, Janet, and Whitney were like literal titans for the industry and public. I would go as far to say that wasn't really replicated until 2008-2010s when Gaga, Katy, Beyonce, Rihanna, and even Justin exploded. The 90s had great popstars too but was never dominated by a group like these. I don't know if people here know music history well enough to understand how crazy their debuts and careers were and how much of an anomaly that is. I lived through the debuts and careers of all those artists. Been following Madonna since 1983. We should also give credit to Britney, who started between Madonna and Katy. Her early songs and videos had an absolutely huge impact. The impact of Baby One More Time was stunning, as was Oops and Crazy. In 2021 Gaga wrote: "I have loved @britneyspears her whole career. I looked up to her, admired her strength—she empowered so many people and still does. I couldn’t be more happy for you today. You never deserved what happened, Thank God 4 today you’re a superstar and a super-human being." Ten years earlier, this great moment happened: I live outside the space time continuum. Ouranos 812
Ppl need to stop using the “GP” as a badge of approval honesty means nothing these are the people who watch real housewives and made the kardashians famous also can we wait a few years into an artist’s career before we label them the next something something everyone did it with Lorde and where is she now? BARKDANGER 855
Katy has always been my second fav pop artist after Gaga. Her songs are just fun. Her personality is fun! We need a Katy comeback. Smile seemed to be a collection of songs that Katy or her producers just put together to call an album. Teenage Dream and Prism are pop perfection. We need more albums like that. I thought “Never Really Over” and “When I’m gone” were hints to her return to her pop roots. Those songs are bops! I have hope for her pop return. “I’m on the edge of glory…”

I think the definition of what constitutes the GP is different for each fanbase. I believe the General Public is the public at large, basically everyone, or more specifically everyone outside the group in which you sit. An example: Soul music fans may claim Aretha Franklin is the greatest ever, but one might ask what does everyone else (the GP) think about that? Many Pop music fans may think Gaga should stick with Pop and not get sidetracked with things like Jazz and Movies, but what does everyone outside the Pop world (the GP) think about that? And if you're not a Country music fan, some of them may think you "watch real housewives and made the kardashians famous", as you put it, because to them you are the GP. To your point, if people use the GP as a badge of approval, it just means the subject artist is liked by the public at large, not just by a particular fanbase. I agree with you that some are quick to label their favorite new artists as the greatest ever. Just human nature. I felt that way about Gaga when I first discovered her, and I still feel that way. Btw, I love Aretha Franklin and love that Gaga is so multi-talented and diverse in her career, and I wish the best for Real Housewives and the Kardashians even though I never got into them. I live outside the space time continuum.
jimmytimestep 2,708
@SlayMeToVenus this is a wonderful thread, thank you! Honestly I've for the most part resented Katy for her success during the ARTPOP era and never really dug into her as a performer nor artist...until I saw her Vegas show; which. was. everything. Talent is the real deal, folx. The show is stupid (as it should be) but Katy is a true, talented singer, performer, and honest to god DIVA. She's not Gaga, for me personally, but she's pretty sick. I'd rather see her show than other options (Sting, Morgan Wallen, Maroon Five, etc) I would love for them to collaborate someday. Even as actors! Ronk 14,762
I agree. Sometimes I feel like I'm the GP because I don't seat firmly into any one fanbase. While Gaga is my fave, I love so many of the other pop artists and I also love classical, jazz, blues, rock/metal, folk, soul, country, and bluegrass, and I attend concerts of all of those genres. I guess I'm also basic, because when people here claim a song is basic or generic, I think wait a minute, I love that song. Oh well. I believe every artist has great worth because each brings inspiration, joy, and entertainment to many people. Every artist is just a person trying to make it in an industry that is often tough and unforgiving. Artists are just people, yet each is a much needed hero larger than life to some people in their fanbase. I celebrate the achievements of all of them. I live outside the space time continuum.
