FN Meka, a “robot rapper” powered by artificial intelligence, with over 10million followers on TikTok and more than a billion views on the platform, has inked a deal with Capitol Records.

FN Meka was created by Factory New, a “virtual” record label who were the first to “sign” FN. The company’s co-founder, Anthony Martini, explained the company’s process to MBW last year, saying they had created AI technology that analyses popular songs from specific genres. Based on that, he said, the technology generates suggestions for the building blocks of new songs such as “lyrical content, chords, melody [and] tempo”.

I mean with this total sincerity—who was pulling their data to think there’s legitimate demand for this? I see the tiktok numbers but that isn’t really the best metric lmao there’s more factors. Something like this has no longevity which record labels want in an artist. It’s like a trendy funny thing but a BIG part of why people like music and artists is being able to have access to them. How do you access an AI? The metaverse? :ladyhaha: it wreaks of out of touch exec

This whole AI Meta verse stuff is so f**king dystopian, I hate it

I'd love to see just how 'creative' AI musicians are or if it's just mashing together stolen work like AI Art

I'm tired of these companies claiming "oh look at our new "AI" celebrity!!" when every time it's just a regular person speaking/singing with a virtual avatar.

There is even a kpop group trying to use an "AI" member as one of  their selling points, and it's just a person singing and doing motion capture, like pls that's not what "ai" means :v

That being said there is ai technology that can produce new music based on what it hears, so that part is totally possible.  But when the headlines are advertised like this, I feel like people will just assume the character itself is ai.
