Well, firstly it’s already spreading to other demographics in the population.  The virus can be caught from skin to skin contact or handling objects that someone with the virus has also handled.  This stigma that you must be having sex with lots of men is incorrect.

Secondly, shaming gay men will have the exact opposite effect on the situation than you want.  Many gay men over the world still feel ostracised from society so burdening them with more shame will only push them further into the shadows, spreading the virus between other gay men and not seeking attention or wanting to admit to having it.

A bit of compassion doesn’t cost anything.  If you catch it, hopefully people will treat you respectfully

I really understand and support what you have said! I really do (it might not seem that way) have compassion and would never shame someone for being ill.

But, surely there should be some kind of boundary and accountability towards the spread of it.

We know that during the Aids pandemic that gay people didn't listen. The virus kept spreading.

The same with Africa. The virus just kept spreading. Not because of racism, but because of social practices.

So, shouldn't we actually target the social practices of people where viruses are spreading instead of being focused on the idea of everyone being "equal" in their very unequal lives?

I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong

This is actually what is wrong with the world. Are we really having a competition about the success of a virus spreading??

The Polio pandemedic (again?!?) is closer than we think.

I was responding to the fact that Twitter user turned it into a Billboard Chart stats breakdown. I couldn’t help but laugh at that piece of it, but I don’t find the multiple plagues funny if that’s your concern?

I don’t think there’s a competition being rooted for here, but there’s only so much we can do if there are people out there continuously engaging in risky behavior. The anti-vaxxers, the party and play crowd that’s known for cruising s*x parties and clubs promoting it not realizing that Monkeypox is spreading through the physical contact and now impacting other demographics outside of men who sleep with men…it’s all horrible but one thing I’ve learned over the course of the last two years with COVID is to not panic and just be cautious as best as possible.

I understand the point you’re making but just like with the AIDS crises, targeting a population of people who already feel targeted has the reverse effect.  You tell people they’re going to be disease ridden, they’ll die and you do it so publicly that the population turns against them… they accept it and do it anyway.  A lot of gay men during the aids crises accepted that they could get it, because who cares?  Everyone thinks you’re already full of disease and treats you poorly so why take precautions?  The AIDS crises is a perfect example of how you don’t handle an outbreak.

There’s a tonne of unreported deaths amongst straight people who caught HIV from their spouses during the peak of the crises.  The social stigma forced them into hiding, so it’s not just those that partake in those “social practises” that will be effected by such a stigma being attached to the virus.

All of this. The AIDS crisis is a prime example of everything that went wrong with how an outbreak was handled.

This is such an ideological assessment of results. We all understand the political consequences of reporting results. This is the foundation a free speach and an independent media.

But, if 96+% of men who sleep with men are responsible for the spread of an east African virus, then what is the counter argument?

Surely it is social practices that needs adressing?

I mean I just explained why targeting social practices doesn’t work :bradley: If you target social practises, you’ll drive it underground instead and people don’t come forward… but let’s not loop over this.

I got vaccinated last Friday and will continue all my social practises :vegas:

I just do not accept your explanation. To me, it just seems like an acknowledgement that people will continue doing whatever they want, no matter what the actual consequences. .

This is exactly why a virus is spreading?

Why are you all choosing political correctness over biological truthfulness?

It’s not “political correctness” to say shaming people didn’t work last time.  We’ve literally turned the tide against HIV through campaigns that centre around understanding, knowing your status, U=U, making prep easily available and removing the stigma of all of this.

I can’t keep reiterating how wrong I think you are on this.  I don’t know wether you’ve got some religious beliefs or you’re one of those gays that have some weird jealousy of sexually active gays or what but SHAME does not work, so knock it off.
