I keep seeing memes on Twitter saying 《世界上只有一个中国》, meaning "There's only one China in the world." Yes, there's only one China, and there's also only one Taiwan. Taiwan does not equal China.

China does not recognize Taiwan as an independent and sovereign country. It sees Taiwan as an island belonging to China and subject to complete rull by the CPP and President Xi. The official U.S. policy is to recognize "One China," and not acknowledge Taiwan as a state. This is the norm worldwide, as Taiwan is not a U.N.-recognized nation. (There are exceptions, but the vast majority of countries do not recognize Taiwan.) 

The context of this dates back to the mid 20th-century, when anti-government rebels forced supporters of the ruling party south to Taiwan after more than a decade of civil war across mainland China. 

Sovereignty is the single most powerful concept in international relations, as it empowers states to run themselves as they see fit without interference from outside actors; essentially, it's about independence. China sees any acknowledgement of Taiwan as Taiwan as ignoring Chinese sovereignty and thus advancing anti-Chinese policy.

Their issue with Taiwan is much more specific. After World War II, the Nationalists and the Communists fought for control of China. The Communists won, and the Nationalists fled to Taiwan, where they established their own "government in exile". Not only do the mainlanders claim Taiwan as part of China, but so do the Taiwanese claim the mainland, as they claim to be the legitimate government. In fact, their official name to this day is "the Republic of China". And not only did they claim it, but they were actually recognized as the legitimate government of China by the UN and the U.S. (among others) until the 1970s.

Nowadays, Taiwan has democratized, there are multiple parties, and many Taiwanese want to declare independence from China (i.e. give up their claim to sovereignty over it). But for now, the standoff remains.

china has been warning us since 1949 so, they always speaks outright during their press conferences by Taiwan Affairs Office that china's going to massacres taiwan with bloody acts.

This also leads to the interesting fact that Taiwan claims a territory bigger than China itself. Renouncing their rights this territorial extend would basically be a declaration of independence, so Taiwan's territorial claims are simply frozen in time (even though Taiwan does have diplomatic relations with Mongolia, it still *theoretically* claim its entire territory).
