ABC announced today that Grammy and Oscar Award wining artist H.E.R. has been cast as Belle in their live action special of Beauty & the Beast scheduled to premiere this December.

The singer stated, "The world will see a Black and Filipino Belle! I have always wanted to be a Disney princess. And I get to work with two wonderful directors Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu," she added. "It is very surreal and I couldn't be more grateful."

Chu also added, "We were both influenced as storytellers by the original animated movie, so it's very exciting to collaborate together to honor the artistry of that timeless classic while also inspiring a whole new generation of creators."

This year marks the 30-year anniversary of the original Beauty and the Beast film, which included voice work from Paige O'Hara and Robby Benson.

Love this for her and can't wait what she does with it, but these live action films need to stop. First of all, they're almost always bad, second, they're almost always and certainly bad. Also, IF this is for representation, representation doesn't always have to be replacing these clearly white characters, why not make them their own original film? :saladga: idk i just feel strongly about this lol :billie:

Edit: This isn't actually a film but a television special, but my point still stands:bon:

I get what u mean. Disney debuted Germanic princesses the previous century (exc Pocahontas). This century could be a chance to debut Disney princesses from other parts of the world.

but imagine, it would be mean to tell a girl she can’t play Belle cuz she has another colour. And also, these movies have been shown all over the planet, girls everywhere wanted to be a Disney Princess, at that point it’s pure pedantry to discuss about the colour of the actress playing a make believe white character, that is white  because back then all princess characters were pale by default.

This is for a live television special based on the broadway musical (similar to what other networks did with shows like Sound of Music, Grease, Hairspray, Peter Pan, etc.).

Also, a LOT of Disney is routed in nostalgia.  While we've gotten diverse princesses in this century such as Tiana and Moana, many people still go for those that were released in the Classic/Renaissance era (I'm happy to provide a breakdown of the history of Disney Princesses if necessary).

It's not a remake. They did this with The Little Mermaid a couple years ago. They're showing the original movie, but the songs will be performed live, like a Broadway show.

I didn't know HER existed outside of award shows

I like that about her persona. She prefers to be mysterious and closed off, doesn't like being in tabloids and prefers to just work on her art.
