Madonna is the reason why women in pop are expected to switch up their sound/image with every era. She has HITS for days. She pushed so many boundaries in terms of sexuality, image, and performance. She brought Trip-hop to the forefront in the late 90s and is still inspiring artists today. Her musical influence can definitely be seen in some of the alternative pop girls of today (Grimes, FKA twigs, SOPHIE, Arca, Rosalia, Kelela, SZA, Sevdaliza, Florence Welch, Charli XCX, Solange, etc.) Then, I would argue Lana Del Rey. But in 2022, the same can be said about Gaga. Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Ariana Grande… All the new big names are influenced by her, and so many more up and coming pop stars credit Gaga as an influence. Gagaism 11,612 Posted July 20, 2022 Share Posted July 20, 2022 I have an opinion that can sound controversial but whatever In my humble opinion I’d say that Michael Jackson and Madonna CREATED what pop music is today and always, this whole movement that turned out to be a culture on its own with pluses of many other great artists that only contributed to give it more forms. The two that CHANGED it for me are definitely Britney Spears and Gaga. If we go back at time we can clearly see how things changed in pop music and culture in general drastically after the influences of both of them in all kinds os aspects from the music itself to the idea about what a popstar is and how it could affect other people lives. I feel like Dua Lipa, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Meghan Trainor, Ava Max, etc have all cited Gaga as an inspiration. Of course, I don't follow any of those girls so I could be wrong about a couple of them but still, she's an icon that many of the newer artists of today look to tbh.
