While I disagree with his right wing politics and views on anyone that isn’t a man.. no one should be shot because of their political views (which is likely it seems).

First part I'll accept. The 2nd part... well.. maybe not shot & killed but I can name at least 30 politicians that should take a bullet to the foot or the toe or something.

I live in Tokyo and I think all of us are in shock.

He was definitely a divisive politician, but I can honestly say that no one wanted him dead. 

Unlike say America, where at least 30% of the population totally wishes this would happen to either Biden or Trump.

He was the Prime Minister for a long time and while I disagreed with many of his policies, he definitely helped Japan become more open to immigrants.

R.I.P. Mr. Abe.

Abe was pretty divisive (he's viewed as a right-wing nationalist who has downplayed that Japan forced women into sexual slavery during WWII), but I believe he was the longest-ruling Prime Minster in Japanese history, and the loss to Japan cannot be overstated. Moreover, guns are tightly regulated (though not banned) in Japan, and shootings there are extremely rare, so people are in a state of shock. 

I've been reading how his assassination could threaten the stability of the Asia-Pacific region. Regardless of one's views on Abe himself, this is terrible for Japan and that part of the world.

I don't think A Not Romney comparison is fair at all tho he was definitely right leaning. About consumption tax, the logic there may have been that it is often considered one of the least economically painful ways to gain revenue per dollar (in this case yen) and since higher income people spend more they also pay more taxes. But whether it's truly progressive or actually regressive hinges largely on basic necessities being exempt from the tax since that's where poor people spend most of their income and I'm not certain how Japan did it but if basic necessities are exempt it's a tax you pay electively when u choose to buy a want with disposable income. But he certainly wasn't raising taxes on the general population or cutting a bunch of essential services

 

He did cut Corporate taxes but they were quite high to begin with so imo it wasn't an unreasonable thing to do

 

Abe's was trying to agressively break the cycle of low investment and chronic deflation Japan had for nearly 20 years. It also involved a lot of spending and money printing by the Central Bank (I don't know if that was cordinated with them)

 

I don't think Abe was necessarily a "let's favour the rich I don't care about everyday people" kind of guy I think it was more like, Japan isn't getting investment and we also need to break this deflation cycle so he threw in a bunch of measures to try to achieve that, which some may have perceived as rich pandering tho I don't think that was ever the intent or the purpose

 

That being said, I'm sure the tax cuts at the top to try to be more internationally competitive, and the (limited) success at ending deflation (I'm sure many people liked deflation and most people don't understand it's harm on the economy) probably pissed a lot of people off
