PunkTheFunk 125,719 Posted July 8, 2022 Share Posted July 8, 2022 Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated Friday on a street in western Japan by a gunman who opened fire on him from behind as he delivered a campaign speech — an attack that stunned the nation with some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere. Abe, 67, was shot from behind minutes after he started his speech in Nara. He was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later pronounced dead despite emergency treatment that included massive blood transfusions, hospital officials said. The term heart failure means the heart cannot sufficiently pump blood and supply necessary oxygen to the rest of the body. As PM, he pursued (by domestic standards) an extremely hawkish foreign policy, attempting to rewrite the Japanese Constitution's section on "forever renounc[ing] war." This was by far the most controversial piece of his platform. He also pursued some controversial fiscal policies, including tax increases on consumption and tax cuts for the wealthy, along with heavy government investment in bonds. His administration also got wrapped up in some corruption allegations at various points (google Shinzo Abe veterinarian) But from a stylistic and charismatic perspective, Abe was not especially divisive or polarizing. What's especially surprising/confusing, at least for the moment, about this shooting is that Abe hasn't been PM for some time now; he stepped down years ago to focus on personal health issues.
