Fresco 1,688
I'm unhappy with the justices that testified to congress that Roe v Wade was settled law, but then overturned it anyway. I think they were sworn in that testimony and it was a lie. I do not respect that, nor them. There are backlogs of untested rape kits. There are rapists found guilty that had 8 year prison terms reduced to 8 years of probation because an old male judge chose to. I wish these pro-life zealots were more interested in lives of people that were born, instead of micromanaging a women's decision with her doctor. We already have a woman that spent 16 months in prison for a miscarraige. There will be more women jailed and charged with crimes, and in some states that includes doctors, clinics and taxi drivers. https://www.endthebacklog.org/what-is-the-backlog/
Brizel 593
Disgusting! The majority don’t want this. But religious right wing judges can just change it like that .. wow.. what a stupid system
LaLuna 12,732
Can't believe this is happening in 2022. You'd think as a society we'd made enough progress... Look, I understand how some people can be uncomfortable with termination of pregnancy. It's a very touchy subject with heavy moral and ethical implications. And I have yet to meet a woman who got an abortion and was perfectly fine with it. It's a very, VERY difficult and traumatic decision to make. But in the end, what a woman does with her body is her choice. No governing body should have any say in whether or not she should keep the baby. It's HER decision, period. And they claim to care about saving a human life and that abortion is murder, what about if the baby is born into a poor or abusive family who can't provide the financial or emotional support the child needs? Of course they never think about that. The way society just keeps going backwards is quite frankly frightening. At this rate soon they'll revoke women's suffrage

caulixtla 2,170
This is a friendly reminder to vote blue no matter who. I have a lot to say and some very personal stories about this entire matter, but the stories are personal enough I have to get clearance from other people to make the stories public. Our Justices have lifetime appointments. So the Court will be far right for decades to come. Which is why 2016 was so frekking important. But we all know how that turned out. How is it rational to give someone power for their whole lives with no way of overturning it? The government should change every 4/8 years with the president and should be appointed by the president for their term, that's how it works in UK. MOT 3,608
I'm not a US citizen, so I'm just looking stuff up on wiki to try to get my head around the American system. Basically it seems very unwieldy to me. I can understand Supreme Court judges having a long tenure, as opposed to being voted in or out every four years like a President, but to have them there for life seems extreme. Also, it seems to be very difficult to make a change to the constitution itself. Here in Ireland any government can propose a change to the constitution, then we all get to vote on it in a referendum, and a simple majority (i.e. over 50%) is all that is needed for it to pass. In 1983 we voted (effectively) to insert an outright ban on abortion into the constitution. In 2018 we voted to remove that ban.

Bc it was founded on the ethics that the justices would be “impartial” but, obviously, nobody is impartial and it’s just another black/white situation like the rest of US Politics and government

The original idea was a Justice would be free from the things that usually affect politicians like bribes and graft if they had a lifetime appointment. Among other things. But yeah. It's something I'd REALLY like to change.
Chlorine 47,976
Republicans already packed the court by blocking Garland and rushing Barrett. This is absolute insanity. Something has to be done.
