I feel like many of these problems come from the lack of education of some Americans

Keep in mind that it’s only Generation X and older (people born in 1980 and before) (EDIT: A closer look at the numbers indicate the cutoff for when voters born after this year vote more than 50% Democrat is closer to 1970 than 1980) who vote more than 50% for Republican presidents. Demographics indicate we will get a national blue wave once the boomers die off in large numbers.

Democracy is basically dead in America.. if it wasn’t clear enough before today. Imagine if Hillary Clinton had been elected. America would’ve been in such a different place.

I’m a lot more hopeful. The current Supreme Court is a dying gasp from a party whose voters keep getting older and older. And, it’s reversed once the boomers die off, and once we have more millennials and younger voting than Generation X and older, we can pack the Supreme Court. Considering the size of the nation, we really need 13 justices on the Supreme Court anyway. I’ll probably live to see an expanded Supreme Court.

Impeaching the Trump appointees is not entirely off of the table, but we need 67% of the Senate to pull it off.

While reinstating Roe, I would like to see this future 13-member Millennial Supreme Court overturn Citizens United.

America is the worst thing to ever happen to the planet. That's the fact.

My generation and the generation before me are the worst thing to ever happen to this planet.

Let me give you just one example of how my generation acted in high school, to give you a sense of the values and beliefs I grew up with: I remember when a girl was shunned for allegedly having sex at a party in my high school. Some bullies found some pictures of her with friends that were important to her and destroyed them; I remember her crying over losing those pictures. None of the men were put to task for having possibly non-consensual sex at that party.

This is how the kinds of vales people who still vote for Republicans today grew up with. Some of us have moved beyond those values, though. I’ve been spending the last decade or so unlearning a lot of patriarchal values I grew up with, a process that is ongoing (no, a man doesn’t become more manly by sleeping with more women. No, a woman doesn’t become less of a woman for sleeping with more men. Etc.)

I'm not completely sure how legistlation works in the US but could this have been avoided with the amendment of the constitution during the Obamas tenure or a supreme legislation regulating abortion?.

Its wierd how one of the most controvertial topics in the US was backed merely by Judicial authority.

Supreme legislation (federal law) wouldn't necessarily have stopped this because it could have been found unconstitutional in some dumb way. A constitutional amendment could have though.

Thanks for clearing it up

The Biden administration should work on that soon before this case is used as precedent to cause bigger issue's in other spheres

If I remember correctly, when Roe v Wade was decided it was because the SCOTUS at the time felt abortion rights fall under women's right to privacy in healthcare. So it became a protected right under that interpretation of the constitution.

The problem is now we have different judges and they interpret the constitution differently. The majority feel that right to privacy in fact does NOT cover abortion, so it's no longer a protected right under the constitution and each state can place whatever limitations or outright bans on the practice that they want.

The fear now is they'll also feel other rights like contraception, sodomy, and same sex marriage aren't protected either.

It's a really sh*t way of governing. Using the whim and opinion of 9 people to control the constitutional rights of 330 million.

So right now, the plan is to protect these rights on the state level. The SCOTUS can't ban abortion rights in states that allow women to be treated like people nor can they deem pro-choice legislation unconstitutional.

However, the hopeful goal is, if we can expand our control of congress and the senate, we can take those state level laws and lay them across the entire country. Abortion, same sex marriage, interracial marriage, etc may no longer be constitutional rights under this bullsh*t court but they can be legally protected rights. And the SCOTUS couldn't do sh*t about it.

And in truth, that's what should have been done years ago. Well, at least for abortion rights. Obama used his super majority from 2009-2011 to pass the Adorable Care Act. They could have easily codified abortion rights then too and they'd still be in place today.

It's a lot harder to strike down laws like those. Protecting our rights through SCOTUS decisions is a bit like passing laws with executive orders. They're far too easily turned over. Passing laws through the senate though? Much, MUCH more solid.

We just have to outlast the Repukes. Make sure they never have a supermajority especially and do our best to hold on to the legislative branch this year and the presidency in 2024.

Keep in mind that our queen has rather fragile mental health. She was very brave to talk about this back in May of 2019:

As you can imagine, as a very prominent public figure, she got a lot of pushback and attacks from the right for standing up for her values. I know she supports us here, but I think she just doesn’t want to deal with a bunch of right-wing trolls. Especially considering her mental health, I support her decision.

  • 3 weeks later...
Letmelivemylife

Forgive me for a second because im about to get personal. My first abortion was when I was raped at 14. I'll never forget the day I found out. It was 2 days before christmas and it was particuarly snowy outside. I was already 9 weeks pregnant when I took the bus to the local state run clinic because I didnt have any money. My best friends sister had to go with me to sign the consent forms because my birth parents were too strung out on drugs to care. Ill never forget the protesters in front of the clinic screaming obsenities at me. Telling me im taking the easy way out. Calling me a murderer.

For those people, all i can say is Fu*k You. Nothing about this choice was easy. Jesus Christ I wasn't trying to decide between cherrios and cornflakes at the grocery store. Part of me died that day right along with my baby. I was never ever the same. There was a huge gaping hole that could never be filled no matter how hard i tried.

I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you
