Drag me or whatever but its bittersweet for me. Growing up, Ellen was literally the only out gay person I knew of and saw on TV. In retrospect, she was so brave to do what she did WHEN she did, and paved the way for so many others. Regardless of what you think of her, and what culture has decided the type of person she is, she is a gay icon and is instrumental in gay becoming mainstream.

A trailblazer who's coming out allowed an entire generation of queer folks to have an easier and more open life.

Regardless of the mess that led to this, she really normalized queer identity for a generation of people, so hats off to her for that.

exactly, i wonder when we will have another iconic openly lesbian host of hit tv talk show. she is part of queer history and she should be celebrated for the amazing things she has done, just as much as she is dragged for the bad things she's done.

I mean, I think she’s a bad person, but I also believe that her life’s work means a lot to her and she would have wanted this to end in a different way. On a human level, I feel sad for what that loss symbolizes.

And personally, I really enjoyed the show. It’s too bad my opinion of her soured after everything came out. I truly did want to believe that she was as nice as she portrayed herself to be.

Well, so much of the "bad things" she has done is heresay, further perpetuated by cancel culture. I'm not saying she's an angel, just that we need to be mindful to not believe everything we hear and read. If we didn't see it with our own eyes, how are we to know what happened

oh, yes, i absolutely agree! i wanted to say that people love to forget about everything people have done for the community as soon as something "not kind" happened. and the way some completely erase someone's accomplishments after these scandals upsets me sometimes.

It's worth noting that tomorrow it will be exactly 25 years since she came out on her sitcom, and had the world turn their back on her. 

After the episode aired her studio received bomb threats, Laura Dern (who was playing her love interest) received death threats, full page adds were taken out in the New York Times calling Ellen a degenerate, she lost sponsors for her show, she was vilified by Christians, and became the butt of every joke. Before every episode of her show a parental advisory warning came on screen to warn parents of the horrors of homosexuality. 

Imagine coming out, loosing your career, and weathering an onslaught of nasty and cruel comments, only for future generations to criticize you for being embittered by the sacrifices you made for their benefit. 

Ellen will return, again, when the world has learned whatever lesson they need to learn this time.
