Sweden and Finland will officially apply for NATO membership together

*There is some confusion about what's going on. Sweden and Finland have NOT applied yet. It's just confirmed by Swedish and Finnish insiders that they will apply together in May and that Finland is waiting for Sweden.

----------------

Sweden and Finland have agreed to submit simultaneous membership applications to the US-led Nato alliance as early as the middle of next month, Nordic media have reported.

The Finnish daily Iltalehti said on Monday that Stockholm had “suggested the two countries indicate their willingness to join” on the same day, and that Helsinki had agreed “as long as the Swedish government has made its decision”.

The Swedish newspaper Expressen cited government sources as confirming the report. The two countries’ prime ministers said this month they were deliberating the question, arguing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had changed Europe’s “whole security landscape” and “dramatically shaped mindsets” in the Nordic region.

Finland’s prime minister, Sanna Marin, said then that her country, which shares a 1,300km (810 mile) border with Russia, would decide whether to apply to join the alliance “quite fast, in weeks not months”, despite the risk of infuriating Moscow.

Her Swedish counterpart, Magdalena Andersson, said Sweden had to be “prepared for all kinds of actions from Russia” and that “everything had changed” when Moscow attacked Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly warned both countries against the move.

Why would NATO accept them over Ukraine who has waited forever to be let in?

Because they have been super partners (as close to NATO as you can be without being a member) with NATO since the alliance's creation. Their armies are NATO compatible and their geographical location is incredibly important from a strategic point of view. Plus, NATO has been begging them to join for decades.

Publishing these informations at this point is very dangerous, considering the fact that no Finish media outlet has published any confirmation yet (about having sent the aplication). I’m pretty sure they’re trying to keep everything as lowkey as possible, knowing how easily Russia can manipulate the joining process.

Finnish and Swedish media have already confirmed this information. Nobody said that they have sent the application. The decision to apply next month together have been made hence why the title says will and not have. I am not sure if you read the article?

Also, the desire apply haven't been low-key at all. That's why Russia threatened Sweden and Finland 6 times in a month.

Well, it's not about blaming, but putting everything in perspective when analyzing a geopolitical conflict like this.

Personally, I doubt whether it's the right time to announce plans to apply for NATO membership, but what do I know...

A war with Sweden and Finland (which are both better equipped and better integrated into the NATO system than Ukraine) would mean opening a northern front over some 1,300 km, on lands covered in swamps, forests and lakes. As of now, Russia already struggles to advance at a fast speed in southern Ukraine that is basically an open field. Moreover, a northern front would directely threaten Sankt Petersburg and possibily drag EU into the war (however when the two pillons of EU, Berlin and Paris have rather mild stances to the war compared to Poland and the like, this doesn't paint a particularly reassuring image :green:).

The historical precedent is also not completely concludent - Russia has a habit to forcefully make countries stay in their sphere of influence, but did nothing when the Baltics joined EU. Moldova was invaded in 1992 when unification with Romania became a possibility, Russia did nothing except to threaten when the Baltics entered EU in 2004, then Georgia and Ukraine both got invaded when they made steps towards NATO in 2008 and 2014. Russia may want to occupy some territories like Gotland and turn them into puppet states like Transnistria or Abhazia in order to blackmail NATO into not letting them join the alliance.
