If you haven't heard of the BeReal app and you're not a member of Gen Z, you're forgiven. The social media app is the latest to grab the attention of the younger generation – and its popularity is rising quickly.

This year alone, downloads have grown by at least 315%,according to data from Apptopia.

What is BeReal?

Social media can be time-consuming and pressure-inducing, but BeReal says it is aiming to change that.

Here's how it works. Once a day you get a notification from the app. It tells you that it's time to post your BeReal for the day and you have two minutes to do so. Your friends are also supposed to get the notification at the same time.

The idea is you take a photo of whatever you're doing at that time, no matter how mundane or exciting. You could be walking to class, taking a bus to work, or maybe you get the notification right as you're sitting down for dinner or on a bike ride.

You take one photo of what you're doing with your back-facing camera, and at the same time, your phone takes a photo of you with your front-facing camera – surprise!

That's it. There are no filters or third-party apps to change your appearance. Retakes are allowed and you can still post if you miss the window, but in both cases, your friends will see that you retook the image or posted late.

It’s a pretty cool concept, I might have to check it out.

I remember there was an app 10+ years ago where you and like 3 friends create an album and you each have like 5 pictures to take. This was back when Instagram was a photography app sans the influencers, memes, and Twitter/Tik Tok/Reddit screen posts.

Im so out of the loop with **** like this, I still cant fully get into tiktok. Im sorry but my goal in life isn't to waste my time sharing stuff constantly on 40 apps. Im done. I wanna be outside more, I wanna live kinda old school sometimes. Meet people irl, talk irl, live in the moment, not be on my phone all the time.

I’m gen z and hate stuff like this lol there’s no room to be expressive with it, that’s why I’m sticking to other social media. It’s definitely a cute concept and I love the no filters aspect, but some of us like to edit things in a non-harmful way, like the sky lol

TikTok is actually really fun if you find a certain community

I love all things hello kitty and Sanrio so I follow a lot of tiktokers who post their finds in stores

Wolf in sheep's clothing.

If social media "can be time-consuming and pressure-inducing", what is this then? Yet another app, yet another way to consume your time. And how is it not pressure inducing if it's literally pressuring you to post whatever you're doing when you get the notification, even if you're allowed to post later?

Once it gets big, its "intentions" change, just like every other app. If you really want to BeReal, log off and look around, outside of your phone. Social media is still social media

I mean myspace, facebook, instagram and twitter were invented because people just wanted to share some significant parts about their lives, that's literally the concept. Meanwhile this app is about sending you doing some random stuff, who has time to scroll through this? I believe the whole app is just meant to help developers create some database of activities people are doing and sell it for huge cash for some machine learning tech. Literally they advertise themselves as being against time-consuming social media so their solution for you is to provide you another platform but this time without any purpose.
