The Greatest Thing - Lady Gaga ft. Cher

I just listened to the demo on YouTube for the first time and all i can say is wow. It’s such a pump-up feel good song. Does anyone know when was it recorded and why was it not released?!

It’s such a strong power anthem with 90s nostalgia. If it were released today, I think it would be a hit because it gives such ABBA / disco vibes. It could have also probably been a hit in the early 2010s given the self empowering message. But if it were released in the mid-late 2010s it would have probably flopped…

I don't think it was a hit. The song was cute but not particularly strong IMO. According to Gagapedia, Gaga wrote the demo in 2007 and then Cher took over the song in 2011. Gaga didn't like the final version apparently, so its wasn't released. I vaguely remember comments (rumors?) about how Gaga didn't like that they never met to record the vocals.

Both Gaga and Cher discussed it on Watch What Happens Live:

it's kinda corny... idk if it would have been a hit but it would make a cute standalone single

Definitely has some cheese factor, but it’s honestly one of my favorite unreleased Gaga tracks. It would have had a really interesting chart performance given the star power.

Been a cuff touple, a puff bupple, a tough couple of years.

I listen to this all the time and I love it but Gaga had her reasons and it's understandable. This is a CHER duet and the least she wanted to do was to get together with her and discuss the collaboration instead of just passing it around without meeting. Of course that was back in 2011-2013 she has probably changed her mind about working like this but makes sense she wouldn't want an old song to be the one collab she does with her.

I found this fan made video.  I especially like the part about Chaz, and all the clips that show Cher as a person.

I think it would've flopped hard. I'm glad she decided to not release it. :poot: It sounds like German Schlager. :reductive:

in a way it sounds so bad that it's actually cool again. :hor:

Don’t forget how BIG camp pop music was in the early 2010s! It might sound cheesy now but back in 2011 I think this would’ve been a hit!

I’d still love her to include it if she ever puts out an album of unreleased material.

Tell me why I have fantasized about her re-working it and putting it on Chromatica instead of Sine :messga: obviously Sine From Above is a vital song on Chromatica given the meaning, but idk I love it so much and think it would be pretty big even if it wasn't a single. Would def have more streams than Sine does. It could even be a deluxe track or stand alone single in the future, plsss queens give it to us :firega:

It would’ve been a hit for sure. It’s very GP friendly, and catchy! They must collab again, in person next time!

Don’t play with me, it just hurts me.

I agree w this…

This was the era that takes a line like “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag” … and makes it a hit.

Totally agree. Maybe it wouldn’t have been her best song, but the demo is already better than SFA in my opinion.
