The interface is so basic that an edit history may not be practical and without it, people will get shady and deny they tweeted policy violating stuff. So many people think that Musk will bring Trump and the other alleged January 6 coup attempt participants back onto it. That would be bad. "They" still cannot accept the factual truth and continue to spread lies. Freedom of speech only applies to government actions.
