PartySick 160,566
I can't at there being any level of real outrage about this A smartass joking about a woman's health condition got jacked by her husband. It's literally nothing. You're stinky

Bolkins 4,125
This whole situation has been so interesting seeing peoples responses and what justifies violence, and what quantifies violence too. I think Will has done the right thing for apologising. I think he was way out of line for doing it and it was shocking to see, I really thought it was a stunt. As for justifying it to defend Jada’s honour (if you will) I think that is dangerous territory. At an Oscar’s show it’s a slap round the face, but in the real world down the local bar an argument like that could result in someone dying. That’s why violence should never be the answer and it’s risky and slightly strange to see it being justified or downplayed in this scenario. Not the bore worms! Like, idk if y'all are too sheltered or if I just wasn't sheltered enough but again, it's a slap. How about a little perspective here You're stinky

What was the most awkward to me was seeing him partying at the Vanity Fair after party like nothing happened.

And sorry, we don't use physical violence for those kinds of situations. If that kind of toxic masculinity is normal to you, then I don't know what to tell you. Yes...after Chris made fun of his wife's health condition? The anger is justified. The violence, of course, is not and never is but it's certainly not shocking enough to warrant global media attention and outrage The way people are up in arms you'd think he went up there and snapped his neck or something. It's something people are using to elevate the idea the joke was beyond the pale because generally HEALTH CONDITION is seen as something very serious. Why? Because health conditions we hear about are usually things like diabetes, or lupus, high blood pressure. Things that if they don't put your life in peril, come with serious consequences such as needing a injections, medications, machines, regular hospital visits, pain, discomfort, disability. While I recognize the loss of hair is a substantial and meaningful loss - and emotionally painful - the reality is that this "health condition" almost always only requires that the person it's happening to (and it happens to a LOT of people - comes to terms to with the new reality that their hair is not what they want it to be. In my mind, Jada was showing she was confident and had come to terms with it. Shitty joke, sure. But I don't think Chris Rock or the writers thought about it too deep or considered people would elevate it to "health condition". Her health is just fine. I don't care if you're Kanye, I don't care if you're will smith - that is a no go area for audience members. I find it surprising you would normalize that kind of behaviour. And yes, get slapped across your face and then shouted down and threatened from the audience IS humiliating, and not something a comedian should have to tolerate. old sanuk 383
Necessary publicist/PR firm release defending trash; that’s all. Smith’s behaviour both physical and verbal is inexcusable. I can imagine Sidney Poitier spinning in his grave.

I’m sure that is very scary to the people who actually have it. You don’t get to justify what health conditions are severe enough for the person who has to deal with it every day. “Invisible” health conditions are still health conditions. It's literally nothing. We don't know if Chris was joking about her health condition, or if he just made a joke about what he thought was Jada's chosen hair style, but regardless of the intention of his joke, hitting someone is not an appropriate response. Will has recognized that, and apologized. Which is great. But the language you have chosen to use in threads about this issue, "a husband jacked someone because of something he said about his wife," is troubling in that it promotes toxic masculinity. Your comment also sends signals to victims of assault and physical abuse that violence against them can be justified if they said something that upset their abuser. You can call it a slap, or getting "jacked," but do not put your hands on other people. It's that simple.

Just hair. It's not scary. Blowing it into a big scary term like that is just a way to try to validate and justify WIll's violence, which I can't see is rational. Or maybe Will lives with Jaida and knows something we don’t about how she feels about her condition. Maybe she’s super insecure and wanted to try to be brave and show it off, and then that happened. You saying I’m “blowing it up to a scary and big term” is completing invalidating the way she could posssibly feel.
