British MP pens letter to Will Smith

It is both possible that 

a) Chris Rock's joke was hurtful and in poor taste, like many of his jokes are; and

b) that Will Smith behaved inappropriately by assaulting someone. 

I hope this will be a wakeup call for comedians to rethink jokes that are punching down at someone, but also, people can't just go around committing violent acts because their feelings (or the feelings of someone they care about) are hurt. And the Oscars need to get better security from now on, sheesh.

They don‘t need security. They just need to blacklist that one person that couldn’t behave at the party and chose physical violence.

Nope, and here’s why! 

It was provoked, do you know what that word means? Ok great. And the slap didn’t have enough force to do any damage. We’ve established that Will could have seriously hurt Chris if he wanted to. But it was not intended to hurt Chris and it did not hurt Chris. Chris would have been on the ground, or disoriented and unable to carry on. He simply turned back and faced straight ahead, quipping about how it was the best night in television. Chris Rock did not press charges.

I also went through each of the many links @SKANK graciously provided about fatal blows to the head and pointed out the differences between those fatal slaps (only 3 examples, the rest were punches) and what Will Smith did. Chris Rock was not in any mortal danger. Chris Rock did not even have a bruise.

Perhaps because he demonstrated to young people that such violence, no matter the type of hit, is perfectly fine if someone says something you don’t like.
