British MP pens letter to Will Smith

I think it's a great letter. She lays out some facts and she is involved in a good cause. I know Will didn't punch Chris, but it was still a bad thing to do and set a bad example. I hope Will accepts her invitation and maybe some good will come.

And I hope there are repercussions for Chris Rock too, or at least I hope there's a debate about the unacceptability of cruel jokes like the one he made. It's kinda bizarre. Here we are in 2022 complete with cancel culture, way more sensitive in general terms than we were 50 years ago, but if you can look up any old Oscar nights from the 70's I bet you won't hear anything like Chris Rock's joke.

violence is not okay on principle; however, when have humans been able to live up to the standard of principle? 

I understand criticizing his behavior (in a televised event, as it is entirely uncivilized), but I also think it is important to remember that humanity is also violence. It exists across our entire planet; it's part of our inherent nature. 

Best that can be done is for parties involved to reach resolution and it doesn't require a social media revolution about it.

She. 

She lost her Dad to a single blow to the head, so this is a cause close to her heart. She works with a charity, One Punch UK, that raises awareness for how deadly single punches and slaps to the head can be. She lists several people in her community who have died from single blows to the head.

A politician using a popular moment in a public discourse to raise awareness about an issue that is personally important to them is okay. Whatever else she is doing as a leader may be open to criticism, but probably not this.

Most people who die from these types of assaults lose their balance and knock their head off of something. This happens a lot in the nightclub scene. Just because it’s a “slap” does not mean this type of attack cannot be fatal.

Chris was not even close to losing his balance so I guess that also doesn’t apply to this situation.

That was a bit much. But hey, you can't just slap someone on stage at the Academy Awards and expect people not to have an opinion on it. Will Smith wouldn't be getting half of the support he's getting if he wasn't Will Smith. He should be thankful that he wasn't escorted out and that he doesn't have a pending court case.
