Exactly, we need to do what's best for everybody. We can help them without them being EU member as we do rn with Ukraine.

The biggest barrier to Georgia joining is probably the fact that it has Russian-occupied territory within its borders. Same situation regarding the Republic of Moldova at the moment..

Last time I checked , Cyprus was gracefully standing in the Mediterranean sea, which expands as a natural border between Europe and Africa. So, yeah. It has always been pretty much Europe.

They can apply but I don't think there's a chance Ukraine, Moldova nor Georgia will pe accepted, at least not right now. You need to have stable society, somewhat functioning economy and your law must be on par with EU-law (human rights being the most crucial).

I hope Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine will eventually join the EU. But what makes EU membership so helpful is not just being an EU member, it's the road to becoming an EU member. You have to seriously reform your politics, judicial system, policies (esp. environmental) and economy to become a member. These reforms can take as much as a decade. It took most of Eastern and Central Europe 14 years of post-communist independence before they joined, and even then many argue that that was too quick.

So yeah, the EU needs to reform first. Unanimity rules need to go on some terrains, the European Parliament should get a much larger decision-making role (instead of the Council) and there should be more rule-of-law guarantees for member states. The risk is that if we expand even further now without first fixing those problems, we'll end up with an ugly system that can't be changed (like the US has).

Though it's nice to mention that from a geopolitical perspective, the EU's ability to legitimately expand itself makes it potentially the strongest 'state' in the world. It's a huge advantage. If the EU manages to get the UK, Turkey, Balkans and Ukraine in the EU, we'll be able to keep up with China and India.

It is very funny how you talk about the requirements to enter the EU. are you talking about stability? We are going to talk about Spain, the country where I live. 
 

Until a few years ago we had an internal terrorist group that has killed quite a few people, there are the conflicts over the independence of Catalonia.Absolutely all politicians are corrupt, even the royal family is corrupt, and sells weapons to the East, which are used in the wars in that area. We kill bulls by tradition. Many women die every year due to gender abuse. Another example would be that homosexuals cannot donate blood in France. And I could go on. It is very funny how Europeans believe they are the best "race" and the most advanced, when it is not so. Last year a boy was killed in Spain.

We could also talk about the rights of homosexuals in Hungary and Poland, and enter into political issues of the extreme right in France. And the list is very long.

Do you really know anything about Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania? It had exactly the same democratic, economic and social situation as Ukraine, and it entered. Do you really know anything about countries you haven't been to?

It's not geographically Europe. The island itself is an extension of the Anatolian peninsula which is located in Asia.

Uhm, an island belongs to the closest continent, and the Mediteranean is located south of Europe, north of Africa and west of Asia (bingo!). Cyprus is closer to Lebanon and Anatolia (both in Asia) than any other European country. The United Kingom isn't an American country just because the Atlantic Ocean extends from America's East Coast.
