Shutting down the Department of Education doesn't mean eliminating educational funding, it just means de-federalizing it. (To be clear, I don't agree with their position. I'm just trying to explain it.) It's one of those "States' Rights" things. But there is also broad opposition to public education in general among conservatives -- which, again, doesn't imply no education, or even no public funding of education; but rather, public funding of private schools. You may hear this referred to as "school choice". More neutrally, it's often called "vouchers". One motivation for this is their desire to integrate religious instruction into schools. You can't do that in a public school, but you can in a private one. But the original, real reason they started their exodus from public schools was desegregation.
